COVID villain Anthony Fauci finally faced his moment of congressional comeuppance Wednesday morning, and, as RedState's Jennifer Oliver O'Connell reported, he took the coward's way out and pleaded the Fifth.

After reading a statement alleging that Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who was chairing the hearing, had an "obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution," Fauci clammed up. Undaunted, Paul proceeded to question him anyway.

We may have been denied the satisfaction of hearing Fauci having to answer for his tyrannical reign as the COVID king – where was the "No Kings" crowd back then? – but we were treated to the delightful sight of his obnoxious attorney, David Schertler, being hauled out of the room by security after ignoring Sen. Paul's warning to keep his mouth shut.

Schertler had previously ignored instructions not to sit at the witness table because he wasn't a witness. Instead, he sat smugly beside his client as he repeatedly invoked the Fifth. Clearly working in cahoots with the Democrats on the panel, Schertler, despite not being a witness and not having a microphone, began addressing the hearing.

Rand Paul was having none of it, telling the attorney he was not recognized to talk. “You will respect these proceedings. You were told not to sit at the table. You insist on sitting at the table and we told you you would not be recognized. You are not invited here for testimony, sir. You are being disruptive. Would you behave this way in a courtroom? No, because the judge would put you in jail. I can’t do that today. But I can have you escorted from the premises,” Paul told Schertler.

Schertler, again clearly taking his cues from the Democrats present, continued to blither away, prompting Paul to call in security to haul his behind out of the room.

“There’s a row behind you, sir. That’s where you were told to sit … and now you’re disrupting the proceedings,” Paul said, addressing Schertler and his antics. “This is the way Anthony Fauci wants to be remembered: For a lawyer not listening to the rules. That’s the way you want to be remembered, and that’s what you’re going to do.”

Watch every glorious moment:

Lest any of the Fauci supporters out there clutched their pearls at the thought he was left without counsel, Paul assured those in attendance – with his tongue firmly implanted in his cheek – that the witness had at least a half dozen other attorneys on hand.

Investigative journalist Catherine Herridge shared what she saw from her seat in the gallery.

For years, Anthony Fauci demanded that Americans obey his rules without question, but when it was finally his turn to be held accountable, he hid behind the Fifth Amendment while his lawyer insisted on turning the hearing into a clown show. In the end, Rand Paul was exactly right: This is how Anthony Fauci chooses to be remembered – as an arrogant bureaucrat who demanded accountability from everyone but himself.
