White House What's Up

As noted above, President Trump is at the Capitol this morning, delivering remarks to the House GOP Conference Meeting, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern. Here's how Punchbowl characterizes the confab:

President Donald Trump will leave the gold-gilded White House this morning to join a rambunctious and divided House Republican Conference in the dank Capitol basement.

Trump’s goal is to try to get the House Republican Conference to coalesce around the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.” Speaker Mike Johnson can’t close this vote out on his own. As we saw with the speaker vote, the government-funding bill and the budget resolution earlier this year, Trump remains the only person in town who can move House Republicans en masse.

Later in the morning/early afternoon, the president will participate in a "Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day Event" on the White House South Lawn.

And we have an update: President Trump is now set to make an announcement with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth at 3:00 p.m. Eastern in the Oval Office.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will host a press briefing at 1:00 p.m. related to the Sons and Daughters event.

Full Court Press...

The Supreme Court made another splash on Monday, issuing an order (a stay of a lower court injunction) that effectively allowed the Trump administration to resume its revocation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of Venezuelans.

(Here's where I note that, again, this was a procedural ruling, not a ruling on the merits, but the practical effect of the Supreme Court's order is that the administration may proceed with its plans while the case works its way through the courts on the merits.)

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Speaking of the Supreme Court, we'll likely see additional opinions handed down this week on cases argued before it this term.

As of right now, the House is expected to vote on the Big Beautiful Bill on Thursday.

MORNING MUSING

Jim Comey wants you to know he's just a shy, retiring, unassuming grandfatherly figure who likes long walks on the beach with his wife and admiring seashell art. He's not savvy or wise to the ways of the world. It never even occurred to him that the message "86 47" he shared on his Instagram page (which he, with his 138,000 followers, barely even knows how to post to, of course) might be construed as some sort of threat or veiled call to violence against the sitting president. How on earth was he supposed to know that?!

Look, just because he graduated with honors from the College of William and Mary and received his law degree from the University of Chicago, and just because he helped prosecute the Gambino Crime Family while at the US Attorney's office in the Southern District of New York, and just because he later served as the US Attorney for that office, and just because he then served as the Deputy Attorney General, and just because he was the director of the FBI, that doesn't mean he understands the nuances of political messaging or codes for taking someone out. Those sorts of things confuse and frighten him. He's just a simple, unfrozen caveman FBI Director, friends. He doesn't know!
