Jennifer Siebel Newsom's Sermon on Respecting Women in Media Ignores Some Inconvenient Facts

California's First Partner and self-proclaimed women's advocate Jennifer Siebel Newsom has yet to make a statement about (alleged) serial rapist and sexual harasser Eric Swalwell, but she found time to shame President Donald Trump for calling out Norah O'Donnell's hackish questioning during a 60 Minutes interview a day after the third attempt on his life in less than two years.

Fortunately for her husband's nascent presidential campaign, she didn't make a video. She writes:

My family and I watched the 60 Minutes interview with Donald Trump and Norah O’Donnell last night, and we were shocked. Seeing a president speak to a woman journalist with that level of contempt — and a clear allergy to facts — is disturbing, though at this point not unexpected given his pattern of behavior.
But that is the problem. Because when that level of disrespect from the highest office in the country repeats itself, it starts to trickle down into our culture and define what power looks like, shaping how boys and plenty of men see women and girls and what they come to accept as normal behavior.
Add in rhetoric rooted in political division, amplified by a digital ecosystem that rewards outrage and misinformation, and this cultural norm of hate, othering, and misogyny becomes pervasive. Behavior that should be challenged gets normalized; what should raise concern is amplified and cheered on.
It’s no wonder we have a culture that normalizes dominance and aggression toward women and girls, which not only silences them but also leads to internalized misogyny in others.
Thank you to Norah, all of the female journalists, and frankly to all of YOU who continue to be brave and speak truth to power.
This culture of misogyny is on all of us, and it has to end.

Presumably, Newsom, whose husband and his press team routinely speak to female journalists with contempt, and who not so long ago scolded and mocked a room full of female journalists who weren't asking the questions she wanted to be asked, composed and posted that message with a straight face and wasn't intending irony. But ironic it is.

And in her missive, she essentially repeats the same lies that seemed to have led Cole Allen to attempt to overthrow the government by killing Trump and administration members. It's almost as if that's the outcome she desires.

Anyway.

Perhaps Jennifer Newsom believes Trump should have spoken to O'Donnell in the way she spoke to the Sacramento press corps during a bill signing for "emergency" funding for Planned Parenthood?

The First Partner took advantage of a disruption in the room, with women behind the podium breaking out in a Planned Parenthood chant, to push her husband aside and scold the assembled journalists, saying:

"We just find it incredulous that we have Planned Parenthood here and women are 51 percent of the population, and the majority of other questions - all of these questions -- have really been about other issues.
"So, it's just fascinating we have this incredible women's caucus and incredible allies, and you're not asking about it. This happens over and over and over and over again. You wonder why we have such a horrific war on women in this country, and that these guys are getting away with it. And you don't seem to care. So I just offer that with love."

As I was composing this article, I realized that the woman who rudely interrupted Gov. Newsom with chants of "Protect women! Planned Parenthood!" so Jennifer Newsom could approach the podium is Asm. Mia Bonta, the sponsor of the so-called "Stop Nick Shirley Act" and wife of the state's inept, TDS-riddled Attorney General. Interesting.

But it wasn't just the scolding; Ashley Zavala pointed out that Jennifer Newsom and some of the lawmakers standing behind Gov. Newsom were snickering and laughing at the, ahem, female journalists who were just doing their jobs.

The way reporters were treated Wednesday was not normal.

Just 12 days later, Newsom's press office employees told award-winning journalist Susan Crabtree to "f**k off" when she asked if Newsom or his office could "provide any paperwork related to his dyslexia diagnosis at any time of his life," a valid question since Newsom continually references his disability.

Five days later, Crabtree revealed that when she contacted Newsom's press office to ask for clarification of his Santa Clara University baseball career, Newsom spokesperson Izzy Gardon replied, "I'm genuinely concerned about your grip on reality here, Susan. These questions belong in the same category as alien-abduction theories."

Then again, they don't consider Crabtree to be a journalist, so they'll deny treating female journalists poorly.

Newsom himself has had a cantankerous relationship with the press and with female journalists. You might remember his crash-out during the summer of 2021 when he went off on an office full of reporters, particularly San Luis Obispo Tribune journalist Stephanie Finucane, in the lead-up to the recall election. Finucane noted that the state had "the highest housing costs, highest gasoline prices, and highest utilities," remarking that "the California dream is more like a mirage with people grinding it out, day after day," before asking Newsom, "How do you make the case that you as governor can deliver the CA dream to all Californians?"

With a scowl, punctuating his words by smacking his desk, Newsom retorted:

"Well, let’s talk about what we’re also number one in, Stephanie. Hey, guys, forgive me. I know I’m a little pointed today, but I’ve been taking a lot from… [gestures toward them] you folks, for a lot of months. So, I should be able to express myself too.
"But I do it with deep pride in this state, as a Californian, not as a—I’m a future ex-governor. It could happen in a few weeks, could happen in a few years. But I love this damn state, we’re number one in job creation. Tentpole of the American economy, 559,000 jobs. Eat your heart out, Texas, Florida. Do you know, Stephanie, that middle class families in TX pay more taxes than middle class Californians? Look that up. That's a fact. I don't know why that doesn't get more damn attention..."

He listed off a number of categories he claimed the state was number one in before finishing his screed with chastisement:

"We're number one in all of those categories. It would be damn nice if our home-grown team focused on what we’re doing right! Everyone outside the state is bitching about the state!"
