President Trump's District of Columbia law & order cleanup has hit the one-year mark. The president came into his second term noting that our nation's capital had become a crime-ridden quagmire, and the president deemed that unacceptable, which it certainly is. So he surged cops and law enforcement into the District, and what do you know, it worked. Now the administration is reporting some impressive numbers.
The Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force will mark its first anniversary Tuesday after making more than 16,000 arrests since its launch, Fox News Digital has learned exclusively, as the Trump administration points to the results of its sweeping crackdown on violent crime in the nation’s capital.
"Under President Trump’s leadership, the Department of Justice and our law enforcement partners have delivered extraordinary results in our nation’s capital. More than 16,000 arrests, thousands of illegal drugs and firearms taken off the streets, and dangerous violent offenders brought to justice mean safer neighborhoods and lives protected," said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. "We will not relent until every community in Washington, D.C., is safe."
The numbers are in, and they are impressive; these are people we don't want on the streets, and add to that the satisfying recovery of some missing kids.
The operation has led to the arrests of 35 homicide suspects and more than 100 known gang members, along with more than 3,200 narcotics arrests, nearly 2,000 illegal guns seized, and 25 missing children located and returned home, according to a White House official.
This effort, while long overdue, was prompted by a couple of high-profile events.
The operation followed the June 2025 killing of 21-year-old congressional intern Eric Tarpinian and a series of high-profile violent crimes, including the beating of a former DOGE staffer and the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy in a case involving MS-13 gang members.
Here's the thing: If there's one place in this country that should be clean, orderly, and safe, it should be the national capital and the city around it. We are the United States of America, for crying out loud; there's no reason why we should have crime and gang violence plaguing the one place that should truly be a shining city on a hill. OK, I know, it's not really on a hill, it's a metaphor, but you get the point. The greatest nation in the history of the planet should, must, have the greatest capital city on the planet. We're not Iran, we're not Nigeria, we're not Lower Slobovia, we're the United States. We're the biggest and the best. Our capital should reflect that.
Now, thanks to the Safe and Beautiful Task Force, we're on our way to having Washington, D.C., be just that.
There is, as is so often the case, another takeaway from all this: Surging law enforcement, especially highly visible law enforcement, into high-crime areas works. Surging National Guard troops into those areas also works. Criminal goblins are a lot less likely to attempt to prey on the citizenry if there's an armed cop or a couple of National Guardsmen standing nearby. There's the problem here that some of the goblins may have just relocated, gone to areas where the surge isn't happening, but that can be dealt with, now that we have the model.
Fighting crime is, in many ways, a nationwide game of Whack-a-Mole. But the Trump administration has shown how to wield the whacking hammer faster and better. It's working. And this is a show that needs to go on the road.
