Overnight Friday, U.S. and Nigerian forces raided the headquarters of the Islamic State's second-in-command, killing him and several of his key subordinate leaders. U.S. AFRICOM made the announcement:

At the direction of the President of the United States and the Secretary of War, and in coordination with the Government of Nigeria, U.S. Africa Command conducted an operation against ISIS in Northeastern Nigeria on May 16, 2026.

The command’s initial assessment is that multiple terrorists, to include Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the director of global operations for ISIS, as well as other senior ISIS leaders, were killed during this operation. No U.S. service members were harmed.

“As President Trump shared last night, AFRICOM in coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, bravely and valiantly conducted a successful mission that resulted in the elimination of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, and multiple other ISIS leaders,” said U.S. Air Force Gen. Dagvin Anderson, commander of U.S. Africa Command. “This operation underscores the exceptional value of the U.S.-Nigeria partnership and was made possible through the cooperation and coordination of our forces in recent months. Make no mistake, our two nations will relentlessly pursue and neutralize terrorist threats and are committed to protecting our people and interests.”

Al-Minuki provided strategic guidance to the ISIS global network on media and financial operations as well as the development and manufacturing of weapons, explosives, and drones. Al-Minuki was the most active terrorist in the world and has a significant history of involvement in planning attacks and directing hostage taking.

President Trump took a victory lap on Truth Social:

Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield. Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, second in command of ISIS globally, thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing. He will no longer terrorize the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans. With his removal, ISIS’s global operation is greatly diminished. Thank you to the Government of Nigeria for your partnership on this operation. GOD BLESS AMERICA! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth provided the backstory:

Last night U.S. forces, in coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and other ISIS leaders.

Back in November 2025, President Trump declared to the world that we will help protect Christians in Nigeria and instructed the Department of War to prepare for action. So, for months, we hunted this top ISIS leader in Nigeria who was killing Christians, and we killed him—and his entire posse.

In conjunction with Nigeria’s President, and at the direction of President Trump, U.S. Africa Command oversaw a precise operation to remove this terrorist.

Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was the senior ISIS General Directorate of Provinces Emir — the number two for ISIS globally — responsible for overseeing the planning of attacks, directing hostage-taking and managing financial operations. The removal of him and other ISIS personnel makes Americans safer by further degrading ISIS’s ability to plan and carry out attacks that threaten the U.S. homeland, American citizens, and innocent civilians.

Operations like last night’s demonstrate the exceptional lethality, patience and skill of U.S. forces, amplified alongside willing and capable partners, to address shared threats. This should serve as a reminder that we will hunt down those who wish to harm Americans or innocent Christians, wherever they are.

This is the second announced strike against ISIS and ISIS-adjacent Islamic terror groups in Nigeria since President Trump issued his "you stop it, or I will" demand to the Nigerian government on November 1, 2025; see BREAKING. There is no clear description of how the operation unfolded, but the video released by U.S. AFRICOM gives a hint:

The video shows a compound being engaged by an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship. There wasn't much left but hair, teeth, and eyeballs after the AC-130 got done; so the ground force involvement seems to have been site exploitation rather than direct action.

As a sidenote, despite the volume of isolationist propaganda we heard during the election, the Trump administration has demonstrated that it is more than willing to use the "big stick" when necessary. What is unusual is that the uses of force are being cast in a "for the good of everyone" light, rather than in terms of raw U.S. geopolitical interests. The elimination of Iran's nukes: it benefits everyone. Keeping Hormuz open: ditto. Removing Maduro: ditto. We see the same framing of eliminating drug runners in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. I think the imminent elimination of the communist regime in Cuba will get the same explanation. No one, outside the Arab world, is going to object to a major ISIS figure being whacked as part of a campaign to protect Nigerian Christians.

This campaign against ISIS in Africa is going to take on added importance and urgency as the politically brittle states in Africa's Sahel come under increasing pressure from an alliance of convenience between ethnic minorities and ISIS terrorists; see Russian Mercenaries and Their Stooges Routed As Insurgents Seem Poised to Topple Mali's Government – RedState.
