President Trump announced Friday that he is designating Nigeria as a "country of particular concern" because of the ongoing slaughter of Christians and the government's unwillingness to take action to prevent it. Using Truth Social for the announcement, President Trump condemned the atrocities.

"Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter, and report back to me. Nigeria is home to the largest Muslim population of any country in Africa, comprising about 56 percent of the population, or about 120 million adherents; 44 percent is Christian. Though officially secular, in those areas dominated by Muslims, Christians are subject to persecution. This includes the imposition of Sharia law and the use of religious police to enforce it. In the far northeast of the country, the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram operates pretty much at will.
The atheists and Islamists on social media have created a cottage industry out of denying that Christians are targeted at all, but the best data indicates that in 2025 alone, there have been over 7,000 murders and 7,800 kidnappings. The kidnappings are largely of children who are then sold into slavery.

The effect of designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern under the provisions of the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998 is largely symbolic. Responses are limited to diplomatic slapfighting, like cancelling cultural exchanges where we send them our non-binary activists and they send us their email scammers; see Section 405(a) of the law. There are also potential trade, security, and economic penalties. Total trade between the U.S. and Nigeria is $13 billion, about half of that with the Philippines, so it isn't like those sanctions will be noticed.
The line in President Trump's message that caught my eye was "We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!" I don't know what "ready" and "willing" look like. Boko Haram is a problem, but the real problem is a fragile state that can't use force to protect Christian communities because the majority of the population is, at best, apathetic to the plight of Christians, if not outright sympathetic to the cause of the killers. Using assets like Predator or direct action by Special Operations Forces would do more to recruit for the jihadis and destabilize the government than it would to protect Christians.
