A Secret Service agent suffered a "negligent discharge" Friday morning and shot himself in the leg while escorting former First Lady Jill Biden at Philadelphia International Airport.
The on-duty agent was handling his service weapon in an unmarked SUV around 8:30 a.m. when the gun went off, sending him to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, according to KYW Radio.
The former First Lady was not in the immediate area, and the Secret Service quickly assured everyone there was "no impact" on the good doctor's movement.
"An on-duty U.S. Secret Service Special Agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon at the Philadelphia International Airport during a protective assignment,” a statement from the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) reads.
"There was no impact to the protectee’s movement, and they were not present at the time of the incident,” the statement adds. “There were no reported injuries to any other individuals, and the special agent is being evaluated at an area hospital in stable condition.”
Statement from Secret Service over an agent accidentally shooting himself this morning. The agent is part of former First Lady Jill Biden’s detail, I’m told by another source. This source added that Jill Biden was in the airport when this happened while the agent was at the cars. pic.twitter.com/U6t1UAVONj

A negligent discharge is an unintentional firing of a firearm caused by human error, such as carelessness, recklessness, inattention, or a failure to follow basic firearm safety rules or protocols. It does not involve a weapon that has discharged due to a mechanical error.
As such, the Secret Service's Office of Professional Responsibility says they "will be reviewing the facts and circumstances of this incident."
Mrs. Biden's safety and the safety of her USSS detail are of utmost importance. Jill wasn't in the area, thank goodness. The agent's injury is non-life-threatening; prayers up for a speedy recovery.
The incident comes just months after RedState's Ward Clark reported on a Secret Service agent on JD Vance’s protective detail being caught on hidden camera leaking details of the Vice President's travel arrangements to a woman who was secretly recording him.
The agent was placed on administrative leave and had his security clearance suspended.
President Trump revoked Secret Service protection for Joe Biden’s adult children, Hunter and Ashley Biden, ending their details immediately after taking office in 2025 and criticizing the large number of agents previously assigned to them.
He also revoked extended Secret Service details for former Vice President Kamala Harris in August of that year, canceling an extra year of coverage that Biden had quietly authorized before leaving office.
Former U.S. Presidents and their spouses receive Secret Service protection for life under current federal law.
