The WNBA has become a hotbed of controversy of late.
We reported on the latest controversy involving the flagrant foul on the Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham and the problematic response of DiJonai Carrington, appearing to blame "white privilege" for getting ejected from the game. Cunningham has weighed in and termed it "intentional," but said she didn't think race had anything to do with the punishment Carrington got in response.
Cunningham had previously spoken out against biological men playing in women's sports, saying it was just "common sense." That earned her some protesters at games. Then Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, male former NBA players, said they would be declaring for the WNBA draft. That prompted the WNBA Players Association to issue a statement saying they embraced "inclusion," but they would not be "used as political pawns."
That threw the ball back into the court of the WNBA.
The WNBA Commissioner Catherine Engelbert has now issued a letter to teams saying they are taking up the issue in accordance with the league's "values," and ensuring "fair competition."

"I know many of you have received questions in recent weeks regarding transgender athlete participation in women’s basketball, and I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention," Engelbert wrote in the memo, per The Associated Press.
"I wanted to reach out to share how we are approaching these conversations at the league office and to thank those of you who have responded to questions from the media with thoughtfulness and professionalism."
Engelbert called the issue "nuanced."
"We recognize that this is a complex and nuanced topic, and we will continue to have important conversations with all of you and the Players Association in the weeks and months ahead," Engelbert said in the memo. "We also plan to convene additional discussions and offer listening sessions for any team leaders who would like to participate. Your perspectives and feedback are invaluable, and I appreciate those who have already reached out to share their thoughts."
"Nuanced" is one way to put it, but that's one heck of a word salad. I'm sure what they come out with will be something to see. If they actually produce anything.
Engelbert said they would be addressing the issue with a task force of team presidents and general managers at a previously scheduled meeting next week.
One can see in the video where Cunningham is clotheslined how bruising and damaging contact can be in the game. Imagine instead of Carrington, it's a 6-foot-8 biological male?

That's one of the points the two men appear to be trying to make, even if the league has trouble figuring out what a woman is.
The only question is: is that too "nuanced" a point for the WNBA to accept?
