Sophie Cunningham Isn't Holding Back About DiJonai Carrington's Flagrant Foul

The Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky on Saturday, 90-86.

But the big news of the game wasn't the score; it was the flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham that got the Sky's DiJonai Carrington ejected.

Flagrant 2 means it was determined to be "unnecessary and excessive." After the foul, you can see Cunningham jump up, furious with Carrington and having to be separated.

Sophie Cunningham was just flagrantly fouled by DiJonai Carrington, the same player who poked Clark in the eye, causing her to bleed.

But then Carrington made things worse.

After Carrington was ejected, she posted "White Privilege" on Threads and tagged the Indiana Fever, apparently claiming she was ejected because of race. But as even the announcers noted at the time, it was pretty clearly a flagrant 2. Not a lot of privilege about getting smacked in the face.

Now Sophie Cunningham is speaking out, and she's not holding back. She called it "intentional."

"Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary. I've never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent up stuff. So get your s--- off. That's fine. I can take it... Yeah, it's intentional," Cunningham said, per ESPN's Kareem Copeland on X.
"She has no reason to be doing any of that. So good way to get her kicked out. I don't even know her. She wasn't even on the team last year when all that was going on. But I do think when people play the Fever, we're nationally televised, there's a lot of eyes on us and people just want attention. And that's her just trying to get attention."

Cunningham also shut down Carrington's "white privilege" claim.

"I think the league is taking care of that. This has nothing to do with race. Last year, I did the same thing and I got kicked out. And I deserved to be kicked out. There's no reason even to play that card," Cunningham said.

The league needs to get this in hand, but I'm not optimistic they'll be able to do that. They're having trouble just dealing with the question of what a woman is, who can play in the WNBA, and dealing with the former NBA players declaring for the WNBA draft.
