The Stunning Question Bari Weiss Asked the 60 Minutes Team That Had Their Jaws Dropping

The winds of change are sweeping at CBS News.

They have a new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, who has been making people on the left nervous just because they think she might not totally be in their grasp. She's not right-wing, mind you. She's just more center liberal. Yet that's what makes the left nervous because she's willing to call out their excesses. Many were freaking out.

When I think of her, I am reminded of Elon Musk. He was in a similar place when he bought Twitter and changed its name to X. He saw the need to save free speech. Then the excesses of the left drove him even more to the right. That's where I hope she might be heading, But even if she doesn't fully step to the right, if she moves them more toward being open to the truth and free speech, that would be great movement for CBS.

As Beege Welborn at our sister site Hot Air explained, referencing the Washington Free Beacon, when Weiss came in, she upset some of of the staff by asking a similar question to what Musk asked of the federal agencies in his DOGE capacity: she asked employees to detail what they do, and what they believe is working or not working.

"I want to understand how you spend your working hours — and, ideally, what you’ve made (or are making) that you’re most proud of. I’m also interested in hearing your views on what’s working; what’s broken or substandard; and how we can be better. Please be blunt — it will help me greatly," Weiss wrote.

"I’ll read all of them carefully. And they will be held in the strictest of confidence. Then I’ll use your memo as a discussion guide for when I meet with most of you (ideally, all of you if time permits) in the coming few weeks," she continued. "The goal is simple: I want to familiarize myself with you — and I want you to do the same with me — to know that we are aligned on achieving a shared vision for CBS News."

Now this is a perfectly reasonable and normal business question to improve the performance of the team. But, of course, it caused some to melt down. How dare she put them on the spot to ask what they do or want to improve things!

Their union then told them not to respond until they got an answer to their demand about the question. Can you imagine how crazy that is? This is what twisted shape they are in - no wonder they need a change.

Then, as Hot Air noted, one of the key people at CBS, the Standards and Practice head Claudia Milne, was out/left as of last week. A source told The NY Post:

“She was part of the woke mob at CBS News. It shows an editorial shift in how CBS will operate,” the person said, speculating that “this is Bari’s first scalp.”

But now word of Weiss' meeting with the team at 60 Minutes has leaked out, and what it reveals is great. You have to imagine their jaws dropping when she dared to ask them this big question.

Bari Weiss, the new editor in chief of CBS News, surprised senior staff at the venerable news program “60 Minutes” during a meeting on Tuesday when she asked a provocative question:

Why does the country think you’re biased?

The inquiry was met with stunned awkwardness, according to three people who recounted details from the private session in Midtown Manhattan. The staff of “60 Minutes,” the nation’s most-watched news program, view their coverage as firmly nonpartisan and reject criticism from President Trump and his allies who argue that it has a liberal slant.

I bet they were stunned; no one with that power over them has probably ever asked them that.

But, of course, she's right and more network executives should be asking that and reevaluating the bias they have. There are many reasons over a long period of time that the American people believe that CBS News and 60 Minutes are biased, but one example would be the editing of the Kamala Harris interview that appeared to make her sound better than her raw word salad answer.

When they got nailed on it, they didn't want to release the video. President Donald Trump sued and they were forced to release the raw footage. CBS and their parent company Paramount had to pay a $16 million settlement.

The American people look at things like that and it screams bias.

Weiss is shaking 60 Minutes up and putting them through their paces. Wanting to hold onto your job is a powerful incentive to try to get it right.

That would be an improvement, and good for truth and the American people.
