Another Update From Mitch McConnell - No, He's Not Doing a 'Proof of Life' Video Just Yet

On Monday, Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) office supplied a new image of the senator and his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, as well as a note from the Congressional Office of the Attending Physician (OAP) updating on McConnell's progress while he is rehabilitating after a June 14 fall which resulted in his being hospitalized, and informing the public that McConnell is not yet cleared to return to the Senate.

“Senator McConnell continues his recovery from a fall at home in June. OAP physicians visit with the Senator every day, discussing all aspects of his rehabilitation care,” the OAP stated, noting that “his bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility."
“Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.”

McConnell's note to the public read:

“There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton. When I first attended forty-two years ago, Fancy Farm was a pretty lonely place to be a Republican. But, my, how times have changed. Today, western Kentucky is a conservative Republican sea of red. So I hate that I’ll miss the fun this year, but I’m sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic.
“As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon.”

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) was asked whether she had visited McConnell. She responded thusly.

As RedState reported, on July 12, McConnell issued a statement and a photo of himself and Chao updating on his condition since his June 14 fall at home, where the senator was rushed to the hospital and admitted. Between June 14 and July 12, McConnell's office was mostly silent regarding his condition. On July 7, both Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and political strategist and radio host Scott Jennings posted to X that they had spoken personally with McConnell. This is the second update directly from McConnell and his staff, and the first to include information from the OAP on McConnell's medical condition.

The anti-incumbent fervor of the nation's electorate, coupled with a number of members of Congress disappearing from both bodies, has sparked criticism, along with wild conspiracy theories about McConnell's absence from the Senate and whether he is still among the living. But despite these sentiments and viewpoints, it appears McConnell will choose to inform and update about his health and recovery as he and his staff see fit.
