In Latest Blow to Conspiracy Theorists, Rand Paul Says Mitch McConnell Is Planning His Return to Senate

Sen. Mitch McConnell

On Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) appeared on "In Focus Kentucky" a Spectrum News political TV program. Host Mario Anderson asked the junior senator whether he'd had a chance to speak with his colleague, senior senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

As RedState reported, McConnell was rushed to the hospital on June 14, and for several weeks, his staff maintained radio silence and would not release updates on his condition. After much internet outcry, social media conspiracies, and a letter from Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) begging for an update on McConnell's condition, the senator and his wife Elaine Chao supplied a full written statement and a "proof of life" photo to allay concerns on July 12.

After Mitch McConnell Releases Statement-Photo, Conspiracy Theorists Are Still Going Off the Rails

Paul responded to Anderson's question on whether he had spoken to McConnell thusly:

No, I haven't. But I've been following the reports and you know, hoping that he gets better soon. The report from a couple of days ago seem to indicate that he's on the mend. That he wouldn't be back this week, but hopefully by next week. I think if there were an important vote, I think he could be back even this week. Most of the votes this week have been on nominations, and so, there weren't any votes where his vote would have made the difference. But we do wish him well, and hope that he gets better soon.

As I said in earlier writings, it is telling that the only Congress members who commented on how terrible it is that McConnell remained absent without giving updates, were House members who were not from Kentucky. I also stated that when Sen. Rand Paul weighed in, that whatever he had to say would be worth noting. Paul is a lot of things, but a company man who toes the line is not one of them. One can trust that if Paul is speaking on the subject, that his facts are sound.

Senator Rand Paul has now officially weighed in. The host also alluded to the lack of information and limited updates from McConnell's staff, and asked how Paul felt about it.

"Are you satisfied with what you know about what's going on with him?" Anderson inquired.

Paul said:

You know, I think that's up to each individual to decide. The public can decide, the individual can decide. I think he tends to be, over time, more private with his information, and that's somewhat maybe his personality or the era he grew up in. I think that he's let people know. People have also known that he's been struggling with his health for some time, and he's chosen to retire at the end of this cycle in November. So I think he's aware that his health is causing him some limitations.

Dare I assume Paul read my last RedState article? Because he is mirroring almost exactly the reasons I outlined on why McConnell might have made his choices in the communication of his health concerns.

Whether this will quench Gov. Andy Beshear's quixotic campaign to appear relevant remains to be seen. After McConnell issued his Sunday statement, Beshear has not ceased to whine about the fact that his office has not received any response from McConnell or further updates.

Earlier this week, Beshear held a press conference in which he acknowledged that while the July 12 update was a “step in the right direction,” McConnell ultimately needed to provide a more comprehensive update in order to cut through the resulting conspiratorial noise.

“We hope that there is a speedy recovery,” Beshear said on Tuesday. “But with all the speculation—and there’s been a ton—the fastest way to end all of it is calling into a news station if you’re otherwise taking calls, putting out a video or two, which all of us do in office.”

Then Beshear appeared on Katie Couric's snooze-cast, which published to YouTube on Wednesday, and spilled this interesting bit of information.

Speaking with journalist Katie Couric in an interview published on YouTube July 15, Beshear explained why he had requested a formal update from McConnell’s office earlier this month. In his explanation, Beshear revealed that he had received information from multiple officials indicating that the 84-year-old Republican had passed away.

“It had been a month before anything had been put out, not even an official statement from Senator McConnell,” Beshear recalled. “In fact, I’d gotten two calls from different agencies—not state agencies—suggesting he’s passed.”

The Kentucky senator went missing for nearly a month after he was found unconscious in his Washington residence and rushed to the hospital on June 14. For weeks, McConnell’s office refused to explain his extended hospitalization or elaborate on his eventual return to Capitol Hill.

But the media blackout finally ended on Sunday, when the senator’s office shared a photo of McConnell sitting upright in a chair beside his wife, holding a copy of The Washington Post’s Sunday sports section in his lap.

It's clear Beshear has no political leverage here, otherwise he wouldn't be appearing on low-rent cable shows or D-list podcasts talking about how McConnell is figuratively ghosting him. These anonymous agencies who "suggested" to Beshear that McConnell is dead are also highly suspect. Why have they not come forward?

No, Beshear's on a fishing expedition, nothing more. However, every time someone with more actual capital or proximity than he has speaks up (looking at you, Scott Jennings), whatever Beshear has cooking ends up blowing up in his face.

Rand Paul responding to questions about Mitch McConnell and giving even a loose timeline on his return, is like a dam breaking. All eyes should be peeled for the next communication from McConnell and his staff. Who knows, he might even add a video.
