Shockingly, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is dead. But Mitch McConnell, who everyone has presumed dead after he was rushed to the hospital on June 14 and has been there since, with few updates from his staff or colleagues, is still very much alive.

As our Managing Editor Jennifer Van Laar reported, McConnell finally responded to the entreaties from mostly people who don't live in Kentucky, as well as KY Gov. Andy Beshear (D), for a statement confirming he was still alive, and "proof of life." McConnell more than obliged in a lengthy, five-paragraph explainer on Sunday, giving credence to the phrase, "The report of my death is greatly exaggerated."
That's an understatement. This is how insane things became. The National Right to Life Foundation published an X post with McConnell's obituary.

Read It Here First: Breaking: Sen. Mitch McConnell Releases Photo, Statement After Hospitalization
The Rumors on Mitch McConnell's Condition Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
In his statement, McConnell was amazingly gracious, thanking everyone for their well wishes and "honest questions." I would have said invasive, but I'm a bit more salty than the senator.
McConnell also made a huge distinction on how his generation handles vulnerable moments and health announcement (as opposed to these new generations who post images of their dinners, as well as video of knife cuts and bruises they've suffered in the course of doing something. I'm not kidding).
“To my fellow Kentuckians –
“When you elected me to a seventh term and made me our Commonwealth’s longest serving Senator, you did so trusting that I’d keep showing up to fight for you every day. And over the past several weeks, Elaine and I have appreciated both your well wishes and your honest questions about what was keeping me away from the Senate.
“You all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older. Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct – I can’t help it.
“But at the same time, I’ve had more than my share of experience with physical vulnerabilities. Surviving childhood polio meant spending my entire life with mobility challenges. They haven’t exactly gotten easier to manage with age. And last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital."
As I wrote on Tuesday:
McConnell is 84 years old and has had major health challenges and scary falls of late. Hence, part of the reason why he will be retiring once his term is done in December 2026. So this unexpected hospital visit and stay could well be for extensive testing and monitoring out of an abundance of caution. At his age, it is not uncommon or unsurprising.
As Rush Limbaugh used to say, "Do I ever get tired of being right or on the cutting edge? No. It never gets boring." Feeling him today.
McConnell confirmed he did not suffer any broken bones from the fall, nor did he have a heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages. McConnell did reveal that he was suffering a mild case of pneumonia, which at 84 years old should be treated as extremely serious. McConnell then echoed what I said above: When you're that old (and you have platinum health insurance), the doctors are going to take you through the full battery of testing. That is exactly what they did.
“I can assure you that I’ve been a good patient. At my age, I tend to do what my doctors tell me to do. I’ve submitted to every test they can think of to help figure out what caused this incident. And I’m continuing to do everything they ask to speed my recovery. In fact, with signs of continued progress, I’ve been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where I’ll keep regaining my strength."
McConnell further confirmed what anyone who has a brain knew: He won't be returning to the Senate floor any time soon, but he is still doing the work of being a senator.
“But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you. I’ve been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team who help me provide timely constituent services across our Commonwealth. I’ve also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between."
McConnell also addressed the screeching hordes demanding he retire, reminding them that, come December 31, 2026, he will be. In the meantime, they can put aside their fever dreams of Beshear calling a special election where the primaried Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY-04) somehow gets more votes than he did in his own district during the primary. He and his stans are delusional if they think Massie could win an election to become the new senator of Kentucky. That cake is already baked.
“You’re right to expect your representatives to work hard for you. And part of my decision to retire at the end of my term this coming January was being honest about the demands of Senate work. But I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do.
“I’ll keep working hard to get back on the Senate floor as soon as possible. And I’ll keep you posted on the progress of my recovery. Until then, I’m so grateful for your prayers and well wishes.”
The statement and photo also featured Cocaine Mitch's sense of humor at work. Many of the conspiracy nuts wanted as "proof of life" a picture of McConnell with a hard copy newspaper showing a current date and image. That's exactly what McConnell gave them, and it's chef's kiss.
FWIW - McConnell is pictured holding a copy of today’s Washington Post sports section, not an insignificant choice given rampant online speculation about his health. https://t.co/xnADCGdw9y pic.twitter.com/CT7hcvCh1b

As I have followed this story, and because, I admit, I'm a bit twisted, I've been trolling some the conspiracy theorists on X to make snarky comments.
When McConnell's statement broke, I reposted one of my earlier comments.

But crazy never takes a rest, and the conspiracy theorists will never be satisfied. Now, they are picking apart the proof of life photo, claiming that it's not good enough, and that a video proof of life must be released.
Fully clothed? Jeans on in a hospital bed? No wires or tubes? No IV? Reading a newspaper?

Then there are the brain trusts who claim the lengthy explanatory statement is bogus, because... wait for it... McConnell didn't address the recent passing of Lindsey Graham.
Mitch McConnell would have been better off staying “missing” because his proof of life tweet is obviously BS. How is he going to put out a “statement” and not a mention of the passing of Lindsay Graham?!? They think we are stupid 😒

Almost everyone in Washington has paid their respects to Lindsey Graham.

And the Republicans who were talking about 20-minute calls with Mitch just last week suddenly have no message to pass on?
Very weird.
These are not serious people.
As someone with class, McConnell decided to issue a statement about Sen. Graham separately from a five-paragraph statement about his health.

But it's not just MAGA and certain Republicans. Democrats are none too pleased with their leaders who didn't demand for Mitch McConnell to prove he wasn't dead.
Listen @JudiciaryDems @SenateDems the reasons the Democratic Base is so discouraged is because you Democratic Congressional Leaders are WEAK, you all have no backbone to fight. #MitchMcConnel has be dead a few days & you all are AFRAID to DEMAND proof of Life. @MichaelSteele RT

Here's the deal. There is a legitimate discussion to be held about our aging congress members, but this isn't the way to have it. Sen. Lindsey Graham tragically died from compounded health issues which caused his heart to fail. McConnell has had his health challenges, but is thankfully on the mend. For whatever reason, people want death, mayhem, and unnecessary mystery, instead of acknowledging that this is how life goes, and for the most part, we have little control over it.
Remember when CNN commentator and Salem Media host Scott Jennings tweeted this on July 7?

I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He’s still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just shy of 20 minutes … about IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history. I told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible.
In closing, CNN and so many others, owe Jennings a huge apology.

Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
