What Happens Now? The Race to Fill Graham's Seat Has Already Begun

The sad news of Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) sudden death on Saturday night at the age of 71 is still fresh, and Republican colleagues and world leaders have been issuing tributes to the four-term senator and his long service to the country. Meanwhile, ghouls on the Left are mocking his passing and showing how truly blinded by hate they’ve become over partisan bickering.

Sick.

As unseemly as it might feel, the reality of politics is that life goes on despite tragedy, and Graham’s death puts the U.S. Senate in turmoil. He was chairman of the powerful Budget Committee and a member of both the Appropriations and Judiciary Committees. He’s been in office since 2003 — almost 24 years.

The GOP already faces razor-thin margins in the Upper Chamber, and they will now hold a 52-seat majority. With Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) health status unclear, that majority narrows to effectively 51 votes.

So what happens now?

The South Carolina governor can appoint a temporary replacement immediately, but then a candidate will have to win an election to secure the seat on a more permanent basis:

It’s a process guided by the Constitution and state law. The first step will require South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, a Republican, to appoint a replacement for Graham on a temporary basis.

McMaster, a close ally of Trump, can appoint a temporary replacement as soon as he wants. That pick will serve until the next special or general election…

The candidate filing period for that special election to win the GOP nomination opens July 21. The election is slated for Aug. 11, according to South Carolina law.

"Henry’s been a great governor, you know now he’s termed out, but he’s going to do the right thing," Trump told NBC News’ Meet the Press on Sunday. "I think Henry will be fantastic."

Graham was in the midst of a reelection bid for his fifth term and had cruised through his primary. Who would take his place? President Trump has someone in mind, but wouldn’t say who out of respect for the late senator.

"I have somebody that I think would be great", he said:

"I have somebody that I think would be great."

"But I don’t want to say it now because it’s just, it’s too soon with Lindsey," Trump said. "I don’t wanna even talk about anybody, but I do have somebody that I think is really good."

McMaster himself could run, considering he will be termed out as governor in January ’27.

Another name who entered the chat almost immediately was former GOP SC Rep. Nancy Mace, who recently lost her gubernatorial bid. She used a clip from The Godfather Part III to drop a hint:

Numerous other South Carolina politicians are considered to be in the mix, including GOP Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-02) and South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette (who lost a Republican runoff for governor to Attorney General Alan Wilson in June).

Politics is a cruel business, and it’s somewhat macabre to move from learning of Graham’s death to immediately talking about his successor. The stakes here are large, however, and the question will have to be answered sooner or later.

In the meantime, RIP Sen. Graham.
