President Donald Trump named a new Director of National Intelligence on Tuesday, and it’s Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William "Bill" Pulte. He will replace Tulsi Gabbard, who is stepping down after her husband was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer.
Trump posted the news to Truth Social:
I am appointing the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, William J. Pulte, to serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence. William has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago. During this period, he will remain Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. Congratulations to Director Pulte! President DONALD J. TRUMP
Pulte will put on his Marco Rubio hat, emulating the Secretary of State by holding several titles at the same time. He will remain in his post as FHFA director and chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while serving as the new DNI.
Pulte took on the job of FHFA chief in March 2025 and was confirmed in a bipartisan Senate vote. The agency regulates Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Bank System, overseeing trillions of dollars in assets.
Of course, Democrats would screech no matter who Trump picked for the job, and they’re big mad at this one because Pulte referred Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, and NY Attorney General Letitia James to the Justice Department for mortgage fraud. No charges have been filed at this time. James was indicted in October 2025, but the case was thrown out by a judge who found that the prosecutor was unlawfully appointed.

If Pulte is nominated to be the permanent DNI, he will need Senate confirmation, but until then, he can serve for at least 210 days in the role.
Meanwhile, outgoing director Gabbard posted a moving update on her husband, Hawaiian‑born cinematographer and photographer Abraham Williams, Tuesday:
