If you ever doubted that Iran has been living under a sadistic, terroristic regime, all you have to do is look at its rampant killing of its own citizens. During and after the anti-government protests in January, the mullahs officially admitted that around 3,000 people lost their lives in the ensuing crackdown, but unofficial estimates put that number much higher, with some alleging that over 30,000 were gunned down or taken away, never to be seen again.
But there’s another type of state-sanctioned murder that’s been on the rise in the Islamic Republic — executions. According to a new report by Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) with the support of ECPM (Together Against the Death Penalty), the rate jumped 68 percent from 2024 to 2025. That number has likely continued to soar as the U.S. launched Operation Epic Fury in late February.
The numbers are eye-opening:

NGOs warn executions are being used as a tool of repression, especially after recent protests.
Hundreds of detained protesters are now at risk of death sentences.
And this does NOT include the estimated 35,000+ executions carried out without any real judicial process.

I’m actually pro-death penalty, and think child rapists, serial murderers, and the worst of our worst don’t need to be staying among the living at taxpayer expense. However, we have a justice system backed by a Constitution, while many of the prisoners in the Islamic Republic are tried and convicted in kangaroo courts at the regime's bidding:
At least 57… including two protesters, were given the death penalty for intangible charges like “waging war against God” and “corruption on Earth,” according to the report.
At least 48 women were also killed, setting another 20-year record, according to the report.
A bulk of the death sentences were handed down by the Revolutionary Courts “after grossly unfair trials and without due process,” the report said.
The nonprofits noted that those in marginalized groups, including ethnic and religious minorities, were “disproportionately represented among those executed.”

The deaths are likely to continue apace as what’s left of the regime desperately hangs on as it’s slowly being destroyed by the U.S.-Israeli strikes. In fact, "judges" are looking for more:
Iran’s chief justice demanded all executions of “enemy agents” be sped up in a jarring video leaked the same day the US secured a temporary cease-fire with war-torn Tehran.
Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, a hardliner within the repressive Islamic Republic, implored the state judiciary to rush cases against “agents and affiliates of the enemy” — which includes protesters facing the death penalty.
