It was going to be a memory to last a lifetime—a boy watched his favorite player win an epic match in the U.S. Open, the player came over to the crowd to sign autographs, and he handed his hat specifically to the young fan.
But in a viral video that shot around the internet like a ricochet, some despicable boor snatched the hat, stuffed it into his wife's handbag, and turned his back on the kid. Un freakin’ believable:
TERRIBLE! Pro tennis player attempts to give a hat to a child at the US Open. An adult steps in and vultures it. Who does this?

Should there be any punishment? pic.twitter.com/Fgzf591jLa
In the video, you can see the boy protesting and asking, “What are you doing?!” But the creep just ignores him like he was an annoying gnat. It was one of those moments that make you question humanity, or at least the times we’re living in. Have we lost all sense of decency?
The truth is, however, that there have always been crappy people; this jerk just happened to live in the era of the internet and will thus live in infamy.

But wait! The story is not over—far from it. The incident brought out the positive side of humanity too, because the Polish tennis star who signed the hat, Kamil Majchrzak, heard about it later and did his part to make it right.
Majchrzak continued signing autographs, oblivious to the shocking incident — until he finally realized what had happened Friday.
“After the match I didn’t record that my cap didn’t get to the boy,” the 29-year-old tennis star posted on Instagram, with screenshots of the heartbroken young fan during the heinous moment.
“Hey Guys, could you help me find the Kid from my match. If it’s you (or your parents see this), please send me a DM.”
Majchrzack, noting he has enough caps to go around, followed up an hour later confirming the boy had been identified and was “impressed by the power of the internet.”
Good for him:

A happy ending… this is what it’s all about.

Meanwhile, the creep behind the hat snatch has reportedly been identified as a Polish millionaire businessman who is currently feeling the heat. I can’t say I feel sorry for him. The internet can be a harsh foe (note: the commentary in the video below is not only funny, but is pretty much spot on):
UPDATE: He took the hat from a kid on camera… and now his entire business is getting torched.

The man who selfishly snatched the signed cap at the US Open has been identified.
His name is Piotr Szczerek, CEO of a Polish paving company called Drogbruk.
The internet didn’t just… pic.twitter.com/Aviv0uW7cD
The internet didn’t just find him. They found his company. And they’re lighting up every review site they can find.
This is what happens when the world sees you rob a kid’s moment, and you smile like you got away with it.
This is an awful and great story at the same time.
For better or worse, there are cameras everywhere, and video can go viral on the interwebs in seconds. That’s why it’s probably not a good idea to be a complete jerk.
