Just when you think you've hit peak disgust, something like this happens.
The World War II Memorial isn't a political statement. It doesn't belong to a political party. If it belongs to anyone, it belongs to the veterans of the world's greatest war, the brave Americans who waded ashore at Normandy under constant fire. It belongs to the bomber crews who braved flak and German fighters. It belongs to the paratroopers who jumped into battle, knowing that no matter which way they looked, there would be enemy troops. It belongs to the Marines who fought a bitter and implacable foe all the way from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. It belongs to the Navy pilots who flew off of shifting carrier decks to take the fight to the enemy. It belongs to the surviving Americans, the last, dwindling few who served in World War II and are still alive to tell the tale.
It's their memorial. It was just placed in a location where the rest of us, the beneficiaries of their courage, can visit it and pay our respects.
So, when some despicable, disgusting, cowardly, vicious vandals desecrate the World War II Memorial to make a low-IQ attempt at a political statement, the entire nation should react with outrage, anger, and disgust. And that's precisely what happened, as we learned on Thursday, when freelance photographer Andrew Leyden showed us the photos on X.
First, it was soap in the pool; that's bad enough.

But the vicious little savages didn't stop there. No, they had to spread graffiti all over the Memorial as well.

What would make someone think this is acceptable discourse? We don't know what motivated these vicious little goblins. Was it Trump Derangement Syndrome? If so, why attack the World War II Memorial? It's not a political statement. It isn't a matter of left or right. It's a matter of honoring the heroes who served the entire country. It's about the brave service members who faced bitter, determined, and yes, skilled enemies, and absolutely whupped them. Were these people motivated by hatred of the military? That's not the least common attitude on the left, and whoever did this, I'd bet serious money is a leftie. But even many liberals acknowledge that World War II wasn't a war of choice; it was a war that was forced upon us, and it was a war we had to win. And we did.
There's no excuse for this kind of vandalism. There's no political statement that makes this acceptable. There's just no sense to it. These people are like vicious dogs; if they can't carry it away, they'll spoil it; the primary exception being that even dogs aren't capable of this kind of vicious disregard.
I'd like to tell you what I honestly think of whoever did this, and by gosh I think I will. On this family-friendly site, the closest I can come to saying what I really think is this: Whoever did this, whoever committed this outrage, is not fit to scrape dog doo off the boots of the last, lowest-ranking service member who wore an American uniform from 1941 to 1945.
Let's hope they're caught. That area must be loaded with cameras. Find them. Arrest them. Try them. Punish them. We owe it to the fallen of World War II.
