Epic: The Most Awesome Robot Ever Made Is Here

Robots are the coming thing, and tied in with artificial intelligence (AI), they are going to change our society and our everyday affairs in ways that we can't yet imagine. There are still major technical challenges involved, including a power source that can run a good-sized robot for more than an hour or two. Another is mobility; humaniform robots, or androids, still have a lot of difficulty with something we humans take for granted: Walking upright, on two feet. If a robot is going to take the place of a human in, say, a natural disaster or something like a building collapse or a fire, then it's going to have to have all those mobility kinks worked out.

Of course, there's an obvious answer. Give the robot four legs. That's what a company called Satyress is doing, with what may be the most awesome robot ever.

They call it Threehalves.

Now, the appearance of the robot, with its goat-like head, well, I can see how some might find that alarming. But this is a robot, not an actual centaur. And, according to the Satyress website, this looks to be a versatile machine indeed.

Humanlike torso and arms allow for natural teleoperation and interfacing with designed-for-human tools and environments. Quadruped body with friction braked joints allows for a stable platform with no latent power consumption when not in motion, and increased stability and failsafes over a biped in both normal operation and in the event of loss of motor control.

Quick connect wrist interface provides uncompromised tool positioning accuracy and repeatability. 12v, 18v, and 48v power, as well as air, can be provided to attachments from the robot side.

All limbs, torso, and head can be replaced and recalibrated in minutes if damaged, and share 3 common fasteners for the entirety of their serviceable assemblies. Bring certain precision to uncertain environments.

There is one problem right up front: It's too big to navigate inside most buildings.

Threehalves will be substantially slowed if attempting to navigate a standard American 32"x80" door, and cannot turn around in a 42" wide hallway or enter a door orthogonal to the hallway. Larger horns can be fit to prevent any passage through pedestrian doors. 2 Threehalves robots fit side by side in crouched position in a pickup bed of 5'6" or longer with tailgate closed.

That seems as though it could be easily enough resolved: Just make a smaller version.

Assuming they can come up with a power supply that will run this big machine for an extended period, this looks like it could be useful in all sorts of situations where it would be risky to send in a human or humans. Exploring rubble after an earthquake, evaluating the area where a wildfire has been extinguished, all manner of uses; it looks ideally made to take several accessories on those arms, which has me wondering, first, how much one of these costs, and second, if I can get one with two chainsaw attachments for firewood, and maybe some arrangement for packing moose quarters out of the bush. Oh, and I bet one of these would scare a bear out of our raspberry patch, too.

In fact, it would probably scare the neighbor's kids out of our raspberry patch.

This robot would seem to have taken a big bite (hah) out of the robot mobility issues. It would seem to be a handy layout. The humaniform upright torso with two arms makes it possible to interact with tools and equipment intended for humans, while retaining four legs for increased mobility and stability.

And, yes, OK, we have to admit, it looks a little creepy. That, too, can be easily remedied. Just make a few alternatives for the head. Oh, and throw in some other colors, too.
