Texas Democrat Now Blaming Democrats for Zionist Prison Firestorm

There's a thing in politics known as "doubling down on stupid", and a certain Texas Democrat candidate's photo should now appear alongside that phrase in any political lexicon. The Texas Democrat in question is Maureen Galindo, who is running for the House of Representatives to represent Texas's 35th Congressional District. And, yes, she's nuts. She's daffy. She's a half-bubble off plumb. She's several fries short of a Happy Meal. Her elevator doesn't go all the way to the top.

This is, as my colleague Ben Smith recently wrote, the candidate who wants to repurpose Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention camps to hold "Zionists."

Ben writes:

A Democratic congressional candidate in San Antonio wants to turn an ICE detention center into a prison for "American Zionists," and she has a runoff election in one week. Maureen Galindo, running to represent Texas' newly redrawn 35th Congressional District, is facing a cascade of condemnation after a series of social media posts in which she called for Zionists to be imprisoned, accused Jewish "Zionists" of controlling politicians and the media, and declared that her runoff opponent should be tried for treason.

Now, Galindo is feeling some backlash from those remarks, and she is blaming... other Democrats.

The Democratic House candidate under fire for recommending imprisonment for "American Zionists" blamed journalists and her own party for allegedly mischaracterizing her as wanting to create a holding center for "American Zionists" and a purported castration facility.
In an Instagram post last week, South Texas sex therapist Maureen Galindo proposed legislation that would repurpose a federal detention facility to imprison "American Zionists." In other posts, she also accused her Democratic runoff challenger, Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Johnny Garcia, of being paid to put "Jews and Mexicans in concentration camps via Zionist trafficking networks."
In a social media video posted Thursday, Galindo blamed journalists for mischaracterizing her comments and said she has received threats and hate mail. She also sought to set the record straight about her reference to using an ICE facility in her district.

Oh, yeah. She's a sex therapist. I swear, you can't make this stuff up.

Here's the dark side of all this: Maureen Galindo is running on a streak of sentiment that's been popping up more and more, predominantly on the left: Not just ordinary run-of-the-mill antisemitism, but a nasty, even darker streak of "anti-Zionism," which seems to be code for "blame Jews for all the world's ills." There's an old saying, "History doesn't always repeat itself, but it often rhymes, and that iambic pentameter seems to be going right now among the American left - and around the world.

We can take some ease with the understanding that Maureen Galindo is bug-nuts crazy. As a sign of that, note that she's blaming the Democratic Party apparatus for the backlash on her earlier remarks, and her response again is nothing less than daffy.

Galindo then accused House Democrats’ campaign arm, the DCCC, of fueling the uproar and criticized the organization for backing (Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Johnny) Garcia over her.
She then accused Garcia of being the "PR guy" for the "deadliest jail in all of Texas" and called him a "Zionist-backed cop-candidate."

Maybe the DCCC is backing Garcia over her because Garcia isn't spewing Jew-hatred and isn't completely loony-tunes? (Honestly, not being a "sex therapist" would seem to be a point in his favor as well.) But then, being crazy has never been a disqualifying character trait - if you're running as a Democrat.
