Lunar Base 2027: NASA Boss Drops Explosive New Artemis Timeline

The United States of America is the most awesome nation on the planet to day for many reasons, not the least of which being that we are the only nation to ever put men on the moon and bring them safely home; not to mention that we did it with the level of technology that produced a 1972 Gremlin and less computing power than a wristwatch of today. So, when the Euro-weenies start showing their hubris about cathedrals, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, and so on, we can always show them this:

That's one of the biggest technological flexes in history, and we first did it in the 1960s, with freedom fractions, inches, and pounds, not Euro-weenie metric measurements. The problem is, we haven't done it again, not for right around half a century. But now plans are on the table to set up a permanent moon base - and to get cracking on it as soon as next year.

The post concludes:

And I think the public is going to be able to tune in and almost watch us build this space in real time as we start landing on the moon."

This is, of course, going to be another major technological flex, along with a way of saying, "Screw you, China." The Middle Kingdom has been making noises about this for some time, and the number of Chinese astronauts to ever set foot on the moon remains at zero.

While the technology is interesting, the biologist in me has some questions. Prolonged periods spent in free fall or in low gravity can have serious, even permanent, effects on a person. The pull of gravity on the lunar surface is about 16 percent of the stable, happy one-gee we enjoy here on the home planet, which would necessarily make any human presence on the moon temporary, just like duty in the International Space Station; there may be a constant presence, but it won't ever be a permanent posting. Also, the moon lacks Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere, both of which shield us from serious radiation, although putting human habitations underground may help with that.

It's the gravity that prevents this from being a permanent assignment; it will be a duty station, but never a colony. Even more severe are the implications of pregnancy and birth in that low gravity, and the fact that kids conceived, born, and raised on the moon would look very different, and would never be able to visit the home planet, as one gee would kill them.

But a mostly-automated base? That's getting back to some 'Merica stuff here. We do it because we can - and because the other nations of the world can't, and it never hurts to rub their noses in that fact now and then.

I wonder if there's any way to persuade the Trump administration to name this first installation "Moon Unit Zappa?"
