There are few crimes as heinous, as hateful, as crimes that target children. Well, now there's a little good news on that front; a recently concluded law enforcement effort in southern California has recovered dozens of missing children from ages 14 to 17.
A sweeping operation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office’s Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, with assistance from multiple other law enforcement agencies led to the rescue of dozens of missing children between the ages of 14 and 17 in Southern California and neighboring states, officials announced.
The sheriff’s office said that in Riverside County alone, some 5,000 – 6,000 children runaway or go missing each year, with the vast majority of them returning home not long after leaving.
While that's a shocking number - 5,000 to 6,000 a year - note that (while an exact figure is not forthcoming) the Riverside County Sheriff's Office note that the vast majority return home quickly - a temper tantrum, perhaps, rather than a real runaway or worse, an abduction. This effort was focused on those kids who didn't quickly return home.
During Operation Safe Return, investigators identified 50 children who had been missing from one to 24 months and conducted extensive investigations into the whereabouts of each child.
“When determining a child’s possible location, a multi-disciplinary team consisting of law enforcement and social services responded to the area for his/her recovery, which included locations in Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Orange County and Los Angeles County,” officials said in a news release.
A well-coordinated effort, this, by a host of state, local, and federal agencies.
Here's what we don't see in this report: Where are the arrests? If these children were being held captive by parties unknown, why are those parties unknown? What was their legal status? Were any kids taken across the border in either direction, or were they meant to be taken across the border? What kind of operation was this? Who ran it? When will we see some mug shots of the goblins who were involved with these missing kids? That's all vital information as well, if for no other reason than to make the taxpayers feel they're getting their money's worth. Returning the kids is fantastic, but let's make sure whoever was holding them is dealt with as well.
My friend and colleague Jennifer Oliver O'Connell reported on another such effort in February:

Finding and recovering lost children has been, from the outset, a priority of the Trump administration. It's likely we'll have more good news to report on that front in weeks to come.
Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
