We've been covering the ongoing negotiations with Iran over its nuclear weapons ambitions, among other things. Persuading Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions is a lot like trying to convince a hungry grizzly bear to give up a moose carcass, and it seems American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are getting a graduate lesson in that very fact. A recent report indicates their evaluation is that any such deal will be "difficult to impossible."
President Trump’s top advisors reportedly warned him that making a deal with Iran on its nuclear program is historically “difficult to impossible.”
Trump asked special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner what the chances were of reaching an agreement with Tehran, according to a senior US official, Israel’s Channel 12’s Barak Ravid said on Telegram Saturday.
The pair told the president history shows the West has never been able to strike a positive deal with the Islamic Republic leaders, but that they would continue to “take a tough line” during negotiations, Ravid reported.
“If they agree to what we are asking for, we will give you the option and you decide,” the two diplomats reportedly told Trump.
Here's the thing: If the mullahs, those Bronze Age barbarians currently holding the levers of power, agree to any Western demands regarding their nuclear ambitions, you may rely on one thing: They are lying. They have no intentions of giving up their nuclear weapons program, no matter how far back the recent application of American high explosives has set them; the realization of these ambitions, an Iranian nuclear weapon, would make them into a nigh-unassailable regional hegemon, and the mullahs know it.
It's also a safe bet that once Iran builds a nuke, it will be sent somewhere; Tel Aviv, perhaps, or New York. These are not rational people, and as I'm continually pointing out, the difficult task of weaponizing a nuclear device to fit into a missile isn't necessary. They can simply load it into a cargo container, load the container aboard an old tramp freighter with a skeleton crew, sail it into New York harbor some night, and torch it off.

Simply put, these people cannot be trusted. They will lie, and they will continue to work towards their nuclear goal.
Fortunately, it seems President Trump is willing to show Iran the "or else."
Trump has vowed to use military force if the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime doesn’t iron out an agreement with the US, threatening Thursday that Iran would face a “very traumatic” moment.
With two aircraft carrier task groups in the region, that gives President Trump a pretty big stick to wield.
At last report, the Iranian people are still in the streets, and the mullahs have to be feeling the heat. That makes them more, not less, dangerous. Desperate men will do desperate things to stay in power, and just as a wounded bear is the most dangerous, so are dictators looking at angry mobs and picturing themselves being Mussolinized. Negotiations may be worth doing, if for no other reason than allowing the United States to point out, "Hey, we tried to talk to them." But in the end, this will come down to the people of Iran - although a sky darkened by American aircraft striking Iranian military targets would be a big, big help.
