Trump Announces Big, Beautiful Trade Deal

The first major trade deal is in, and appropriately, it's with the nation that was at one time America, Original Recipe. The United Kingdom has changed a lot since V-E Day, 80 years ago today, but maybe - just maybe - a new trade deal with the world's largest economy may bring back a little bit of former British greatness.

President Trump noted the alignment of dates while putting pen to paper:

The president said:

I just want to begin by saying it's a very special day, because Victory (V-E) Day, World War 2, and just by happenstance, we have the Prime Minister on the phone, and we were great allies in that, and it's very unusual that the trade deal comes due and we signed it up on the same day that we had a great victory, the greatest victory of them all. We are talking more and more about Victory Day, because we were a big part of it, and so was the UK. And it's (inaudible). I don't know what you call it, it's just incredible that that day is the same day we sign a tremendous trade deal for both countries. So I'm going to begin by adding that we just concluded the rare earth deal with Ukraine, that's been fully ratified and approved by their legislative branches. So, we appreciate that, and I'll be speaking with the president in a little while, a little bit later, and we appreciate that. The deal is all signed up and ratified. And we have access to a massive quantity of very high-quality rare earth.

The president also described some of the details of the trade deal with the United Kingdom:

The UK will reduce or eliminate various non-tariff barriers that unfairly discriminate against American products, but this is turning out to be... a really great deal for both countries. It will be really great for the UK also. So, they're opening up their country. Their country is a little closed, and we appreciate that. They'll also be fast-tracking American goods through their Customs process so our exports go through a very, very quick form of approval. There won't be any red tape. Things will move very quickly both ways. The final details are being written up, we'll have it in coming weeks, very conclusive. But the actual deal is a very conclusive one. Just about everything has been approved.

The president also indicated that many more nations are seeking deals:

We have many meetings planned today and tomorrow. Every country wants to be making deals

This is, as someone once said, a big freakin' deal.

The United Kingdom has changed a lot, as noted, in the 80 years since V-E Day. They aren't the same nation that once ruled over an empire on which the sun literally never set, and whose Royal Navy once unequivocally ruled the world's oceans. But they are still the world's sixth-largest economy, following the United States, China, Japan, Germany, and India. A trade deal that benefits both sides sends a signal to the world: The United States is open for business, and we are ready to start making deals.

China would do well to take note.

There are, as the president noted, details still being hammered out. We'll continue to monitor this deal as it unfolds and bring you updates as events warrant.
