Irony Alert: Hakeem Jeffries Furious Over Greg Abbott 'Slow Walking' an Election—Guess Who Did It First?

That sound you hear coming from the U.S. Capitol might just be Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) grinding her dentures over having to watch her hand-picked successor, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), continuously be bad at his job. Day after day, Jeffries proves to be unequal to the task of replacing the woman who kept her caucus in line with an iron fist.

Jeffries, by contrast, is neither a strong leader nor a skilled politician. He seems weak all around, as was recently on display when he showed his willingness to let his Senate counterpart, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), take all the blame for the dismal entity known as the Democrat Party.

You'll recall that the wrath of Hades (A/K/A, the left) came down upon Schumer after he voted in favor of the President Trump-backed continuing resolution (CR) that kept the government open. Aligning with Trump, even if it benefits the American people, is a fate worse than death for a Democrat. The backlash against Schumer was swift and fierce.

Meanwhile, Jeffries looked a lot like this.

He wasn't about to accept any blame for his role in his party's downward spiral.

Not that Jeffries could have done much to stop the CR in the House since Republicans hold a slim majority—it's now 220-213 after the two special elections in Florida earlier this week—but he's a guy who tries like heck to project an air of authority while also possessing the backbone of a chocolate eclair.

Jeffries steps into the spotlight this week, reeking of hypocrisy as he fumes over his party's continuing 213-seat House minority and rages at Texas Governor Greg Abbott for slow-walking the special election to replace Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-TX), who died in March. That's a vote Jeffries would dearly love to have back, but Gov. Abbott isn't in any hurry to give Jeffries what he wants.

Hakeem Jeffries' Response to Question on MSNBC Is Perfect Symbol of Dem Disarray

"Slow walking." Where have we heard that phrase recently? If you said the concerted effort of the Democrat Party to delay the presumed special election to replace Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who was expected to resign in order to become President Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, you'd be correct. Stefanik's nomination was ultimately pulled by the president precisely because of that slim GOP majority, but Democrats put themselves on record as being all in on delaying elections.

Just to recap, when Trump announced his intention to make Elise Stefanik his U.N. ambassador back in November, Democrats, led by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, began to devise a way for Hochul to delay a special election as long as possible in order to keep the Republican's House majority as narrow as possible. The New York state legislature even came up with a bill to empower the governor to have special elections align with the general election. Had Stefanik resigned her seat, that means Democrats could have delayed replacing her until the next general election

And guess who gave full-throated support to this scheme to deny the GOP its seat? Hakeem Jeffries, that's who.

Last week, The New York Times reported that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from Brooklyn, had pushed Hochul to make the change with the Stefanik seat in mind.

A spokesperson for Jeffries previously told the Times that he supported changes to promote election efficiency. On Monday, spokesperson Andy Eichar said, “Instead of whining about a good government election law change that remains under consideration by the legislature, why don’t they do something about Elon Musk stealing the bank account information and social security numbers of the people they claim to represent?”

Rep. Jeffries seems to have had a change of heart now that it's his party needing a speedy election. Go figure. And he's so mad at Abbott that he's threatening to do what Democrats always threaten to do: sue. They love themselves the judiciary, don't they?

In a response to a question from NBC News on Wednesday, Jeffries said it’s “very likely” that Democrats will pursue litigation against Abbott, who has yet to set a date for an election to replace Rep. Sylvester Turner, who died in early March.

Asked whether he thought Abbott was deliberately delaying the special election in Texas' solidly Democratic 18th District, Jeffries said, "Yes."

Not such a fan of the "slow walk" now, is he?

Despite a warning from Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder to "lawyer up," Abbott's team prefers a slower pace, with Abbott's press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, commenting: “An announcement on a special election will be made at a later date.”

If Hakeem Jeffries had even an ounce of self-awareness, and he doesn't, he might recognize how ridiculous he looks. But self-awareness isn't exactly a defining trait of Democrat leadership these days. Instead, expect more whining, more lawsuits, and more flailing—because, when it comes to actual leadership, Jeffries remains out of his depth.
