Why Is Hakeem Jeffries Getting a Free Pass When It Comes to the Disaster That Is the Democrat Party?

If there's one person you don't want to be this week, especially in Washington, DC, it's Chuck Schumer.

Democrats and their radical base, who only now seem to be picking up on the fact that they have been demoted to the role of outsider, have been heaping scorn upon Schumer for what they perceive as his "caving in" on the continuing resolution (CR) that passed last week, which prevented the shuttering of the federal government. Schumer started last week as a stalwart "no" on the CR, and ended it as the legislation's savior.

This did not sit well at all with his party, which has been in a prolonged, post-election meltdown absent strong leaders and sane messaging (and, perhaps more importantly, sane messengers). There's a lot of pent-up rage on the left after their spanking by the American electorate, and it's only gotten worse as their lame attempts to thwart the Trump administration have resulted in their poll numbers dropping like a stone. The image of crazypants Maxine Waters berating a security official guarding the entrance of the Department of Education building is sure to linger in the minds of many Americans ... and not in a good way.

It was a no-win situation for Schumer, who, let's face it, isn't a very sympathetic character. Most of the headlines last week shouted about the looming—and alliterative!—"Schumer Shutdown." When faced with the decision of the Democrats taking yet another L by allowing the funding to expire or align with Donald Trump, Schumer chose Trump. And that's the gravest sin of all to the left.

Schumer has now had to cancel a planned book tour and was forced to go on "The View" Tuesday as a mea culpa for his crimes against the left. Can't sink much lower than that, but here we are.

The Democrat Party is undoubtedly broken, but not because of the CR vote—that just exposed how badly it is fractured—but because its leaders are weak and feckless. And it ain't just Chuck Schumer.

Here's a question: Why isn't Hakeem Jeffries, Nancy Pelosi's successor and current House minority leader, being held accountable for his role in the current death spiral of the Democrat Party? True, he was never going to have the votes to block the CR in the House, but his weak leadership in the wake of Pelosi's reign of terror is a key reason for the Democrats' current disarray.

Chuck Schumer is a dinosaur—he's old, still uses a flip phone and doesn't have a clue how to counter the momentum of the Trump administration and the Republican Party. Hakeem Jeffries, by contrast, is young, supposedly more hip to what's going on in his party, and, in theory, has the chops to take on the Republicans. In reality, however, he seems not only unable to counter the GOP, but also the wackadoo wing of his own party.

Hakeem Jeffries' biggest accomplishment, as far as I can tell, is to have allowed crackpots like Jasmine Crockett, Al Greene and AOC to become the mouthpieces and de facto leaders of the Democrat Party. This is the leadership style of the minority leader:

Whereas Nancy Pelosi was vindictive and ruthless—she'd cut her disobedient members out of a committee or take away their pet projects in a heartbeat—Jeffries seems content to let his crew run amok. And happily let the blame fall on Schumer. Jeffries magnanimously threw some support to the flailing Schumer on Tuesday, but seems perfectly happy to duck back into that bush when it suits him.

All of this is good news for President Trump and the Republican Party. The Democrats seem determined to do everything they can to remain irrelevant and prime the 2026 midterms to be favorable to Republicans. Trump only has so much time to enact his agenda, and the hapless likes of Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, through their obvious political bemusement, seem willing to let the Trump train keep on rolling. They certainly have no idea how to stop it.
