The Senate is racing to finish its work for the summer. That could come late tonight or tomorrow.
The Senate votes today at 11:30 am et on the Russia sanctions bill engineered by late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). That’s followed by a vote on a bipartisan plan to avoid a government shutdown this fall.
What hangs in the balance is the confirmation of Todd Blanche as Attorney General. It’s unclear if he has the votes. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) are nays. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is undecided. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) remains out. The GOP can’t lose any more votes and still confirm Blanche.
What remains undone is a budget framework to possibly tackle some election integrity issues. There could be a procedural vote on a bill to regulate college sports. But that’s not ready to be finished yet. What is a further reach is a vote related to a bill to regulate cryptocurrency.
The next 24 hours-plus could be a doozy in the Senate.

- ❌ In Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto v. United States Department of Health and Human Services (contract termination for services to unaccompanied minors), Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín (Northern District of California) GRANTS plaintiffs' motion to enforce preliminary injunction.
- ✅ In U.S. v. Virginia (anti-mask law), Judge Robert Payne (Eastern District of Virginia) DENIES defendants' motion for stay pending appeal.
- ❌ In U.S. v. Evans (voter rolls), Judge Randolph Moss (D.C.) DENIES admin's motion to compel and DISMISSES case.
I still say that SCOTUS ruling on the election integrity/USPS executive order is about to land. Keep an eye out for it.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
The final vote on Todd Blanche's AG nomination should theoretically come sometime Saturday. (My prediction: He squeaks by with Vice President JD Vance as the tie-breaker.)
MORNING MUSING
I can't predict what the ultimate outcome of Anthony Fauci's contempt referral to the Department of Justice (DOJ) will be. Will they determine there's sufficient evidence to prove up the legal elements of criminal contempt? I've seen semi-persuasive arguments in both directions.
Either way, there's no denying that The Science™️ has been effectively pantsed before the world. Sure, there are some who'll remain blind to his evil doings (in some cases, willingly so), but I'll take a certain measure of satisfaction from knowing Fauci and his hubris have been exposed.
