It's certainly been an up-and-down 24 hours for Freddy, the World Cup tourist from Germany.
He was inundated with negative attacks from people who apparently had to try to upend him for posting his love of America. They claimed he had been to the U.S. before. But he never said he hadn't - he said he hadn't been to the South or seen a lot of the things he was seeing for the first time. And some claimed he was "psy-op" for the government because he was - gasp - positive about America. This despite the fact he'd been posting about European soccer for the last three years. It was an ugly moment intruding on a wonderful story about a student who said he had saved to be here and have this experience.

But despite that negativity, Freddy appears to have rebounded on Instagram. He posted something pretty phenomenal - his last experience before he headed out of Boston to drive to Dallas to see more of America. He had lunch at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant in Boston - Ramsay's Kitchen. And yes, Ramsay has an "idiot sandwich" on the menu, for those familiar with one of his more common insults.
First is a picture of some of the food, then is the video from Ramsay, third is the lobster roll, and then the final picture is Ramsay's classic Beef Wellington.
That lobster looks fabulous. The Beef Wellington and potato puree looked pretty great, too.
Freddy expressed his gratitude, "Super thankful for this experience and the amazing hospitality by everyone in the restaurant."
Ramsay said he was sorry Germany had lost, that they had been his pick to win the World Cup. But he told Freddy to enjoy the lunch, and "take care!" Good on Ramsay for following through on the "treat." Ramsay also helped set him up in the nice hotel in the center of Boston. I thought that was a treat with some of the swag, but he had a treat on top of that with the lunch.
Then Freddy was off on his way to Dallas.
On Wednesday, he went through Connecticut and saw the Saville Dam in Barkhamsted Reservoir. They had breakfast in a parking lot, then hit Kent Falls State Park. They saw the Bulls Bridge covered bridge. You can see those clips if you click on his avatar in the post above and click on the "Day27us" clip. If you have Instagram. He may post them later as a regular post. Otherwise, it's not embeddable.
But there was other big news as well - that Freddy's White House visit was on. Nick Adams, the special presidential envoy for American Tourism, Exceptionalism, and Values in the Trump administration, confirmed the invite.
"Freddy’s only ‘crime’ was loving America and documenting his travels in a completely non-partisan way," Adams said in a statement. "As the Special Presidential Envoy for Tourism, I am proud that Freddy enjoyed his trip here." Adams termed them "radical left." I had said there were leftists involved in my prior story, because I recognized some folks. But there were certainly others.
Adams said he wanted to make sure the "mob tactics would not win."
The visit will go ahead as planned. America remains open for business and open to visitors who simply want to experience the greatest country on Earth.
So it sounds like we're going to see a fun White House visit coming soon.
