World Cup Freddy, the German tourist, has brought us a lot of fun and joy with his account of his travels and experiences across America. It's been nice to see how much he enjoyed being here and how much he thought of America. It was a good reminder of how much we have to be thankful for as Americans, a good reminder of what beauty we have here and how wonderful our people can be.
He was able to find Americana in everything: Ella Langley, Buc-ee's, Waffle House, an Alabama sunset, even when getting lost hunting for moose. He even got to tour the Johnson Space Center with an astronaut and call the International Space Station.
Although Germany lost its game to Paraguay and was eliminated on Monday, Freddy planned on being here for the rest of the World Cup and was asking people where else he should visit. He'd been getting a lot of great suggestions.
But Freddy deactivated his X account on Tuesday. He then explained on his Instagram that there had been a lot of negative attacks from people who seemed to be having a problem with them having a good time here and were ruining the fun a bit.
đ¨BREAKING: Freddy has deactivated his đ account and released the statement below

Weâll never forget you Freddy (even though you wouldnât come to my house for spaghetti) pic.twitter.com/XD4l6UmSU9
He had previously said he was going to shut down the account at the end of the trip after they went home because he didn't want to be an "influencer" or anything like that. That was one reason that people enjoyed him: because he wasn't craving the attention; that's why he covered their faces with emojis.
Freddy explained they just wanted to document their road trip and never imagined anyone would have a problem with it. He said people were digging into his past posts to try to find bad things about him, like claiming he falsely said he hadn't been here before when he never said that.
However, Freddy said they were still going to be here until July 23, and would be here to celebrate July 4th. He noted they would be going from Boston to Dallas, and couldn't wait to get back to the South. But he wasn't going to update on X anymore because of the toxicity. He thanked everyone who was being supportive and for "all the love you are sending us." He said he would make a post a day on Instagram, and, hopefully, it would be more positive over there. He explained he would post highlights from all the days he was here in case people wanted to see them. He also noted he was a student who had saved years for this trip and that he hadn't taken any money or sponsorships because they wanted it to be as normal a trip as possible, though he did acknowledge he took the X creator payout generated by the interest in his posts.
Unfortunately, we also have a contingent of folks who make it so that we can't have nice things and appreciate Freddy for what he was giving us. They were apparently intent on wrecking things. Over the past couple of days, and particularly after Germany lost, I saw a lot of people yelling at him in replies on X, cursing him, telling him to get out and go home. There were some people (and yes, some seemed to be on the left) who thought he had to be a fake because he was posting nice things about America, and that's a pretty twisted way of thinking. He'd been posting about European soccer from the account for a few years, and folks from Ella Langley to the New Orleans Saints confirmed he was real, so, no, he wasn't fake.
It's unfortunate for us that Freddy won't be posting on X about his trip anymore, but I can understand his decision. Too bad he found out that there can be ugliness on social media, too. Fortunately, he'll still be posting a bit on Instagram. And now he can go back to what their intent was to begin with â just discovering more of America.
Thank you, Freddy.
