Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is now the stuff of music legend.
That is, two of the legendary Van Zant brothers have written a tribute song to the popular governor, highlighting his efforts to keep Florida free while heavy-handed efforts by Democrats, from Joe Biden to liberal governors across America, have continued to try their damnedest to impose draconian control after draconian control on the freedom-loving people of this great country.
The Van Zants were born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida.
Johnny Van Zant, lead singer of the iconic southern rock band Lynryd Skynyrd, and brother Donnie Van Zant, best known as lead singer of 38 Special, debuted “Sweet Florida” — a nod to the Skynyrd classic “Sweet Home Alabama” —on “Fox & Friends,” where the Van Zants and DeSantis were interviewed before the song’s premiere.
“He’s fighting for the right to keep our state free/Well, he’s taking on the swamp and he’s calling out Dr. Fauci—Fauci/He’s the only one fighting for you and me!” Johnny Van Zant sings.
“So cool,” co-host Ainsley Earhardt exclaimed. https://t.co/sQizfwKMVK— The Daily Beast (@thedailybeast) April 1, 2022
“We got to thank Governor DeSantis for standing and believing for what he believes… he’s been a great governor for us,” Johnny told “Fox & Friends,” explaining that the governor called and told him he was running for re-election, and wanted Johnny to write his campaign song. He continued:
We really wrote it in a couple of hours, and we recorded it … on an iPhone and sent it to the governor. “We’ve never done that before…and we took a chance.
Before we continue, as a yuuge, old-school Lynyrd Skynrd fan, I’m a purist. Johnny Van Zant replaced brother Ronnie Van Zant as lead singer after he was killed in a 1977 plane crash. Keyboardist Billy Powell died in 2009.
The official music video, featuring DeSantis listening to the song with Johnny Van Zant was posted to YouTube, and audio versions of the song are also available on major music streaming services.
Johnny Van Zant sings:
Well, we ain’t been locked down, we still have our freedom. We can still see our friends and family, oh, our kids are in school and we can go to church on Sunday. And it’s all because DeSantis knows how to lead.
The Van Zants also took a shot at “Brandon” in the lyrics:
The press don’t like it but it sure does get my business
He stands up for what he believes
So don’t come down here trying to change things
We’re doing all right in the Sunshine State
Stay out of our business, leave our governor alone
Down in sweet Florida
Our governor is red, white and blue
Down in sweet Florida
He’s shooting us straight, tellin’ us the truth
Yeah, that’s right
You can take it to the bank
He don’t care what Brandon thinks in the White House
He’s fighting for the right to keep our state free
Well, he’s taking on the swamp and calling out Dr. Fauci
He’s the only one who fights for you and me
Yeah, we’re free
Down in sweet Florida
Our governor, he’s red, white and blue
Down in sweet Florida
He’s shootin’ us straight and tellin’ us the truth
Well, we ain’t been locked down
We still have our freedom
We can still see our friends and family
Oh, our kids are in school and we can go to church on Sunday
And it’s all because DeSantis knows how to lead
Down in sweet Florida
Our governor, he’s red, white and blue
Down in sweet Florida
He’s shootin’ us straight and tellin’ us the truth
Down in sweet, sweet, sweet Florida
Our governor, he’s red, white and blue
Down in sweet Florida
He’s shootin’ us straight and tellin’ us the truth
He’s a military man with the courage to withstand it all
Yeah, we’re free down in Florida
Our governor, he’s red, white and blue
As I was writing the piece, I couldn’t help but smile to myself. “Just one more thing about DeSantis for the left to lose its crap over” — although nothing like the crap the Democrat Party is going to lose all over the country when November rolls around.
