The fallout from the botched California primary election continues.
As if California voters weren’t perturbed enough about the gross mismanagement and outright suspicious manner in which the primary dragged on for a week after “Election Day,” we now have official word that nearly 150,000 mail-in ballots were “rejected.”
You know it’s bad when the Associated Press fesses up to the eye-popping error:
Nearly 150,000 California voters had their mail-in ballots rejected for the state’s June primary, a spike from recent elections even as the state attempts to make voting easier with the goal of boosting participation and counting every ballot.
If you’re a shrewd consumer of the English language, you might notice a few modifiers missing in the AP’s lede paragraph. One of those necessary adjectives would be “legal.”
While Republicans are still bitter about L.A. mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt being overwhelmed by a flood of mail-in ballots after Election Day — many of them obviously harvested from the homeless — thus handing the race to DSA-backed Nithya Raman, there are now even more reasons for all California voters to unite for election reform.
The sheer number of mail-in ballots rejected is not only staggering, but the state’s reasons for their rejection are also alarming.
- Lateness accounted for 93,479 rejected ballots
- Nearly 44,000 ballots were held because voter signature didn’t match
- 8,300 ballots were rejected because there was no signature on the returned ballot envelope
These 148,241 rejected ballots account for 1.73 percent of all ballots, up from the 1.56 percent or 108,982 ballots rejected in the 2024 primary.

Now, there is a scapegoat for the discarded mail-in ballots: The U.S. Postal Service.
No one can cite the USPS as the gold standard for government efficiency (as truly an oxymoron if there ever was one), so the complaint that the postal service was too slow processing ballots, failing to get the postmark on the ballot envelope in time, is plausible.
But there is a simple counter-argument: There shouldn’t be millions of ballots going out in the mail in the first place.
The California voting policy to mail out ballots to everyone and their dog reflects the pandemic-fueled upheaval in the run-up to the 2020 election debacle.
We don’t hear about such nightmare scenarios in Third World countries where they simply have voter IDs and nearly everyone votes in person on Election Day.

What a novel idea. Actually, this was the standard for hundreds of years before the 2020 election.
It’s amazing that “underdeveloped” countries around the world have cracked the code to having free, fair, and fast elections, while California looks like a low-IQ individual who keeps banging a square block into a round hole.
As California descends into a vision of Hades even Nolan couldn’t imagine, its narcissistic governor constantly boasts about the state being the “fourth largest economy in the world.”
Meanwhile, his state is running elections so slow and suspect they’d make a Kenyan blush.
Now, you’ve got to ask yourself: Do California Democrats run elections this bad on accident, or are they doing it on purpose?
After all, while Prop 39 garnered 1.3 million signatures for voter ID, the state’s attorney general has all but ensured it is going to be tanked due to deceptive language.
You’ve got to be a strong supporter of the “feature, not bug” theory at this point.
