After Monday's latest sexual assault allegations against Maine Democrat Senate candidate Graham Platner, and multiple pulled endorsements and calls from Maine and national Democrats to cease his senatorial campaign, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), an early endorser of Platner's campaign and one of his biggest backers, has issued a statement.
I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine. In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside.

It was inevitable, but too little, too late in our minds. As RedState has reported, Platner has skirted multiple scandals during his Senate bid: from sporting a Nazi Tokenkopf tattoo, to antisemitic, racist posts on Reddit, to an account on a child predator site from which he sexted several women while he was married, to other sexual assault allegations, why this current one from a progressive Democrat woman is beyond the pale while the other allegations were not, is troubling and hypocritical. Despite Sanders' pretense at being anti-establishment, this is an establishment move.

This comes on the heels of other endorsements from Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-14) and Sens. Ruben Gallegos (D-AZ) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ) being rescinded. No word yet from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who dubbed Platner "my kind of man."

Platner is still weighing his options, and, per reports, is even negotiating with the Maine Democrat Party on "guarantees" should he choose to exit the race.
