Well, it looks like the Democrats and their close friends and allies in the activist media finally got what they want: An indictment against former President Donald Trump. It is a development that they have been fantasizing about since he came down the golden escalator ages ago.
There are obviously several different angles to this story and its potential ramifications for the future. But from where I sit, there is one that Democrats have not considered while they have been frothing at the mouth at the prospect of bringing down the Orange Man What Is Bad™.
Being that everyone with an IQ above room temperature knows that this debacle is nothing more than a politically-motivated effort to weaponize the government against a political opponent, it seems clear that this could have a deleterious impact on future efforts to hold accountable high-profile politicians who actually commit serious crimes.
As citizens, most of us share a common interest in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served – especially when it involves leaders in our government. However, most would also agree that the pursuit of justice must not be compromised by political motives or bias.
At the heart of this concern is the fear that political bias could cloud the judgment of prosecutors, leading them to pursue charges against politicians and government officials not because of the evidence, but because of their personal beliefs or partisan loyalties. This would not only undermine the credibility of the criminal justice system, but it could also set a dangerous precedent that would make it easier for future presidents to avoid prosecution.
A politically-motivated indictment would create the appearance of bias and political persecution, which could further undermine public confidence in a legal system that is already fraught with various levels of corruption. Indeed, a large segment of Americans have decried the reality that we live under a two-tiered justice system. They recognize that one’s social status, income, race, and other factors can influence outcomes. Adding a political element to this equation will only further exacerbate the problem, especially when it is abundantly obvious that it is only being done to influence the outcome of an election.
Moreover, a politically-motivated indictment could set a dangerous precedent for future prosecutions. If prosecutors are allowed to bring charges against a former president based on political motives rather than actual evidence of criminal activity, it could embolden them to pursue similar charges against future presidents who they may disagree with politically. This could lead to a situation where every president is subject to politically-motivated investigations and indictments, regardless of whether or not they have committed actual crimes.
Of course, if there were actual evidence that Donald Trump committed crimes, then he should be held accountable. However, if the only reason for prosecuting Trump is political, then it could have serious consequences for our legal system and the ability to hold future presidents accountable for actual crimes.
Unfortunately, based on the list of charges, it seems clear that New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the Democrats supporting his actions are unconcerned with this reality. To them, getting Trump is far more important than trying to preserve at least a semblance of integrity in the justice system. If it means keeping the former president from occupying the White House one more time, these people are willing to go scorched earth even if it means fully exposing the fact that our government has become little more than a weapon to be wielded against political opposition.
But perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. By revealing the truth about the government and how it is often used to threaten our liberties, it might just get more people to stand against tyranny. One can only hope, right?
