A Decade Under the Influence

To hell with you and all your friends, it's on.

Monday marked ten years since Donald J. Trump descended the escalator at Trump Tower, marking the official beginning of his campaign to run for president in 2016. Since that moment, the media couldn't quite quit the man. In fact, they couldn't stop thinking about him.

The legacy media's relationship to Trump has always been adversarial at all costs, and I'm not saying "at all costs" lightly. That was absolutely their position, because the cost was, and is still, enormous.

They operated on this idea that they had complete and total control of the narrative thanks to their ownership of the big stages. Whether it was the alphabet networks, social media platforms, or Hollywood, whatever story needed to be told would be told. The people, unable to hear the full story, would go right along with it. For years, the left had that capability and didn't have any reason to fear a counter-narrative gaining any traction.

There was Fox News, of course, but it was a solitary voice that the rest of the media could isolate, ridicule, and dismiss.

Yet, despite its best efforts, Donald Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States in one of the wildest election seasons of the modern era. It garnered him a following that, to this day, remains undeniably loyal, and his subsequent success made him the de facto leader of the Republican Party, even when he was voted out in 2020.

I don't need to talk much about how popular he became, and how that popularity grew as he was attacked and maligned by the left, while they fumbled the bag in a big way. The Biden administration was something of a wake-up call for a lot of America. You know it. You were there.

But while the Democrats are going to Democrat, the legacy media (I know, redundant) exhibited a behavior that I still find incredibly interesting to this day.

Trump's election did something to these people. There's a contempt for him that runs so deep that they're willing to debase themselves in front of millions of people to scratch the itch for. You've seen it yourself.

-Reporters defending riots or downplaying them as they happen on screen.

-Breathless coverage of the January 6 event as real violence from leftists continues to play out in other parts of the country.

-Talking heads looking directly into the camera and telling you Trump's opponent is sharp as a tack and the smartest guy in the room while he tries to shake hands with invisible people.

-Sewing panic and discord over government downsizing that people voted for.

-Blatant lies told about the cruelty of his administration to get people to riot in the streets over deported criminals.

-Proclaiming Trump's ties to foreign adversaries that didn't exist, while the Biden family has clear ties of their own.

-Blatantly ignoring Biden having classified documents in his garage while cheering on federal agents raiding Trump's home to search for any in his, including raiding his wife's panty drawer.

-Accusing his supporters of being the biggest threat to the United States as leftist groups like Antifa assault and destroy across America.

I could go on for days, but what I find incredible about all of this is that they did all of this blatant lying in full view of a public who increasingly knew they were lying. At no point did these legacy media people think to tone it down and pull themselves more toward the center as they watched their approval ratings decline further and further. As people literally tuned out and openly condemned them in the replies on social media, none of them did the smart thing and reversed course.

They just kept going. They're still going.

The cost for this is astronomical... for them. The legacy media's reputation is in shambles. People are literally losing careers over this, and they cannot stop themselves. Not for ten years.

People joke about Trump Derangement Syndrome, but I'm not entirely sure it's a joke. There's almost a desperate hatred here, and I don't see how this could be classified as anything other than an obsession. I would even say this goes beyond tribal politics. Even Democrats are capable of knowing when things have gone too far, which is why quite a few of them voted for Trump in 2024. A couple of them work in his cabinet now.

No, the media is heavy into some kind of ideological brainwashing that forces them to keep attacking, even when the attacks cost them everything. Like some kind of gambler with an addiction, they're in the hole for thousands, but they think the next hand will hit big, and they'll be back on top.

I say this a lot, but in the future, I would love for social scientists to study this time in history and get to the bottom of what we're currently calling TDS, because the media is suffering from it in large degree, and I don't think they can stop.
