It is Election Day in Texas, and most of the focus is on the U.S. Senate race. The focus for weeks has been on the Democrat Party battle, with upstart Texas House Rep. James Talarico waging a battle with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, who is looking to retain relevance. Jasmine’s latest example of mental prowess is showing why she is going to struggle in a general election, but also why we hope for a continued run.
Ms. Crockett had her congressional district erased, so she is striving to remain in D.C. by running for the Senate. Her desperation is such that she has become somewhat untethered from reality – and yes, we fully acknowledge she may not have been fully fastened to it, to begin with. Crockett’s career path has been rather circuitous over the past year, as her stature within the party has shifted.
With the return of President Trump, Crockett became a party darling, thanks to her boisterous camera time and code-switching dexterity, shifting from appearing reasoned and urbane to an inner-city slay queen, and even claiming to be a woman of the farmland, depending on her audience. The woman is as genuine as a clip-on hair extension.
For a time, she was the new darling of the Dems, but towards the year’s end, she fell out of favor. It seems the Democrats gradually came to realize Crockett’s personal PR gambit was more of a drain, and she did not help her cause with examples of self-centered behavior lacking in self-awareness. She launched her Senate campaign with a bizarre choice, appearing silent on camera as President Trump's audio plays with him trashing Crockett’s character.

She was humiliated on the House floor when she went public with claims Lee Zeldin took donations from Jeffrey Epstein; she and her staffers were unaware it was another man with that tainted name. She tried to compare President Trump to Nicolás Maduro, avoiding being laughed off because she was sitting with the only group that made her look smarter in her appearance on The View. Jazzy cleverly sold herself by saying the Democrats would lose the election in Texas anyway, so why not lose with her?!
Now, on the eve of the primary, she delivers another gem of campaign brilliance. Crockett just had to weigh in on the recent shooting in Austin, where an apparent Iran sympathizer killed two and injured over a dozen more while shooting up a bar. It is the kind of electoral grist a candidate cannot resist, and Crockett did not avoid temptation. She also did not disappoint in being reliably inept in the process.
This is just a magnificent half-minute of brilliance. Ms. Crockett dutifully dismisses the concept of blaming immigrants to properly position herself to her base, so blaming guns is the next course to take. However, she is running in a state whose citizens may not be obsessed with guns, but for whom they are a way of life. You do not run to the store to pick up a 12-pack of Shiner without your weapon on your hip, so she had to recalibrate on the fly.
So Crockett lapsed into yet another code-switch moment. Realizing the tripwires she set up for herself, she needed to recover and mollify those who were lunging for the remote. Right in the middle of her rant, the gal who matriculated from an elite all-girls preparatory academy in St. Louis instantly becomes a rootin’-tootin’ 6-shooter “Tay-xin,” right before our eyes. Just savor all of this pandering, y’all.

-The problem
Is not immigrants, it’s guns
- She’s not banning them, because she’s a gun-toting Texan, y’all!

As the polling has been going, Jasmine is in a comfortable lead over James Talarico, but this gap may have narrowed. Since she was subjugated by the redistricting, she has not received the expected backing from her party. After she announced her campaign in December, the Democrat support has been muted, and this has been revealed with the controversy that erupted with Talarico appearing on The Late Show.

Host Stephen Colbert is a full-on Democrat tool, and the fact is that he not only was platforming Talarico, but also showed no balanced support for Crockett, with his production willing to move her opponent’s interview online, rather than possibly be compelled to give her equal airtime.
We are hoping she endures and takes the Democrat nomination. That will give us at least nine more months of her histrionics, pure fodder for us political animals. While even she is indicating there is little chance of winning, at least give us an entertaining coda to her career. We demand that level of extended comedy. If she wins, perhaps she could take image advice from Florida Democrat Frederica Wilson, in an effort to further appeal to Lone Star voters.
