ABC News Works Overtime to Spin Autopen Scandal As Biden Interview Raises More Questions

It is at least slightly encouraging that we see some movement on the Hill regarding the scandal from the waning days of the Biden administration regarding the flood of presidential pardons issued and the use of the Autopen. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) is heading up the panel looking into who used the automatic signature generator and how often. While our expectations are certainly low that any accountability may arrive, it is a positive sign nonetheless.

And there are signs that this could be a deeply significant scandal. The manner in which the press is addressing this in the same way they covered Biden's declining mental state is the tell. Instead of rushing to investigate, we see the media blowing smoke, pointing fingers, and trying to muddy the waters. Earlier, RedState's Bonchie covered the hilariously desperate effort from NBC News to try equating the use of a digital signature on select documents by Comer to somehow be the equivalent of Autopen use.

Now at ABC News, they're undertaking a similar effort by attempting to cite Joe Biden directly as refuting the claims, but needing to avoid the very words delivered by former President Silveralert. The network was basing this on the interview published in the New York Times on Sunday, that interview being an attempt to give Biden the means to counter the House oversight investigation. As we can see clearly, ABC News is striving to diminish and deflect on behalf of the prior administration.

In their headline, they are obvious, invoking Trump and making it appear he has no substantial foundation for his accusations about the pardons. “Trump doubles down on autopen claims as Biden blasts president, supporters as 'liars'.” The ABC News piece lays out Biden’s stern debating of this claim. “He personally made every clemency and pardon decision during the last few weeks of his presidency -- including those made with an Autopen.”

Now here’s the revealing problem. They go on to deliver the decidedly contradictory content that unravels their entire premise.

However, he and aides told the Times that some decisions for large batches of pardons were based on broad categories that various people fell into, not based on reviewing individuals on a case-by-case basis. Biden said he approved the categories and standards for choosing who to pardon.

This brings about at least a pair of confounding realities. That paragraph clearly states he gave open-ended parameters for his staff, and that he did not review individual cases, so how they made the initial declarations is a mystery. But also, they show an abject lack of curiosity with this, to say nothing of the absence of critical thinking. How do they look over that segment and still go on to insist that Biden was on task with every pardon and commutation decision?

Considering this was a man who struggled with formal signings of bills and executive orders, and even insisted once that he never signed one that he had recently autographed, the idea that the impaired president was on board for thousands of these pardons within days is laughable. It has come to light that we are now becoming aware of who was manning the Autopen, and the details are threatening the protections offered. Dr. Fauci is now possibly accountable for giving false testimony to Congress.

Again, we have become skeptical that we may ever see something approaching accountability, as the years of watching people like former FBI acting director Andrew McCabe and crusading agent Peter Strzok go on to score advisor gigs on news networks after being exposed as liars have made us cynical. Still, the very fact that the press is straining to levels where they might injure themselves as they deliver logic so twisted it requires mustard means there must be some very substantial facts behind this latest investigation.
