I started off my Friday in a pretty foul mood; the insane mistrial announcement in the Lindsay Clancy trial had darkened my day (and a lot of other people’s too).
Clancy did not contest the fact that she strangled her three children with exercise bands, but apparently 11 people on the jury didn’t find that enough to convict her on first-degree murder charges? It made me sad for the country — where are we going as a people?
How could fans be lionizing her as a powerful symbol of feminism, when 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan lie dead?
The outcome reminded me of the 1995 OJ Simpson “not guilty” verdict; the jurors seemed to be saying, we don’t care about the innocent victims, and we don’t care about the overwhelming evidence — we just want to make a statement.
Repugnant.
Things didn’t get any better as the day continued and Clancy’s defense attorney Kevin Reddington appeared outside the Plymouth, Massachusetts courthouse to talk to reporters and spread his noxious views.
Ignore that Lindsay is an admitted killer who appears to have carefully plotted the vicious stranglings of three defenseless angels, Reddington told the crowd (appearing to very much enjoy all the attention): She's really nice.

I’m sure the police who had to witness the horror of seeing dead children in the basement probably have a thought or two, as might Lindsay's ex-husband, Patrick, whose 911 call is not available to the public but is reportedly heartbreaking.
Maybe everybody in Reddington's little Massachusetts bubble thought Lindsay Clancy was the bee's knees, but I can tell you that there are plenty of people around the country who believe in law and order, the sanctity of life, and the unwavering commitment to protecting children. They assuredly have something "bad to say about her."
Her kids don't get a say in the matter, because they are no more.
And since we were speaking of O.J., I happened to be seated next to him at a dinner back in the day. I was intimidated because he was a superstar and I was most certainly not, but it turned out he was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Within minutes, he had me feeling like we were best friends.
A month later, he sliced open the throats of his ex-wife, Nicole, and a young man who happened to be outside her residence to drop off her lost sunglasses.
“Nice” has nothing to do with it. Maybe Hitler was nice; I don’t know. He was known to have loved dogs — does that absolve him of the other things he did?
Just disgusting.
Reddington has been saying and doing abhorrent things throughout the trial. During the press conference Friday, he went after the lone holdout juror who — from what we can tell — refused to find Clancy "Not Guilty by Reason of Lack of Criminal Responsibility" (i.e., insanity).
George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley was stunned by the inappropriate and unethical behavior:

Jonathan Turley called it "reckless" and "really offensive."
He's right. In a case this raw, a lawyer does not put a target on a juror.
Jurors have a job. It includes saying no without fear.
Reddington’s attack on the holdout juror in front of the courthouse was, in my view, an outrageous and reckless moment. It would warrant a response from the judge about stoking the rage against this one juror.

If you’re not convinced yet that Reddington is an odious human being, look at how little empathy he has for Lindsay’s aforementioned tortured ex-husband, Patrick, who experienced the agonizing trauma of coming home to find his three children dead:

Any sympathy I had for Lindsay Clancy, as well as respect for Kevin Reddington, just went down the toilet. When asked if he would like to dispel online rumors about Patrick Clancy murdering the children his client killed, he refused to do so. Instead he praised the disgusting, evil, and depraved women on Tik Tok for their investigative skills. He is fueling all of this and loving every minute of it.
This disastrous mistrial could open the floodgates for copycat killers and a flood of insanity defenses from moms affected by postpartum depression. Many pundits have noted that it could actually be a generational setback for women, because employers are going to wonder: Is it worth hiring this lady if she might go nuts and strangle her children? Are new dads going to start filing restraining orders if their wives admit to feeling blue?
There’s nothing good about this case, and it’s a tragedy all around.
I understand that in our adversarial legal system, it’s the job of defense lawyers to fight for their client, and they should do so vigorously. But like O.J.’s lawyer Johnnie Cochran before him, who used race-baiting tactics to get his defendant off scot-free, Reddington decided he had to throw out every aspect of humanity and decency to prevail.
Like Johnnie, he will leave America a more polarized and divided society than when he found it, and yet, he didn’t have to go to those dark places. Whatever happens next, Reddington's legacy will live on, and that's not a good thing at all.
