North Carolina Elections Board Settles With RNC Over Noncitizen Voting in a Win for Election Integrity

The Republican National Committee and the North Carolina Republican Party are claiming victory after they came to an agreement with the NC State Board of Elections on Tuesday that would require officials to use information gleaned from juror questionnaires to weed out noncitizens and remove them from the voting rolls.

The agreement still needs to be approved by the Wake County Superior Court.

The RNC posted the news on social media:

It’s really not complicated, said RNC Chair Joe Gruters — if you’re not a citizen, you should not be allowed to vote.

It is straightforward: if someone admits they are not a citizen when they are considered for jury duty, that same information should be used to ensure they are not registered to vote.

Election officials have a clear responsibility to uphold the law, and the RNC is taking action to make sure that non-citizens are removed from North Carolina’s voter rolls.

The settlement comes after the GOP groups filed suit in 2024, claiming that the state was not adhering to a law that required them to take voters off the rolls if they said on their juror questionnaire that they were not U.S. citizens. Election officials are now forced to take action:

The settlement sets up a timeline for the board to receive and use the jury questionnaires to identify and remove noncitizens from the rolls.

It also directs election officials to provide information to the State Bureau of Investigation if records show that the voter in question cast a ballot prior to becoming a U.S. citizen.

Democrats keep insisting that noncitizen voting is extremely rare, which begs the obvious question: then why do you oppose any effort to stop it? If you really believed that, why would you do everything in your power to block the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act?

While some studies do show low numbers of noncitizen voters in America, conservatives argue that the total could be significantly higher than tabulated because many states make almost no effort to stop the practice or find out who actually voted.

Even if the reports are true, however, the takeaway isn’t that you should do nothing to prevent noncitizen voting. There may be a “low number” of murders in your town, but shouldn’t you try to find out who’s committing them and make efforts to stop them?

The GOP and President Trump have made election integrity a priority, but Democrats keep revealing themselves over and over with their almost universal opposition to any safeguards.

One can’t help but wonder what they’re so scared of.
