RedState has reported extensively on the alarming number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. working as over-the-road 18-wheeler truck drivers. Americans from every walk of life use America's interstates to visit family and friends, go on vacation, or just get to work every day. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue; it is an American safety issue. There have been a series of horrific crashes involving these drivers across the country that have gotten the attention of the Department of Transportation (DOT). While many states are being cooperative in getting these drivers off the road, others are not.

In Missouri, a red state, as of October 31, 494 commercial truck drivers were taken off its interstates because they were not proficient in speaking English. Capt. Scott White is with the Missouri Highway Patrol. He says it is mandatory in the Show Me state that commercial drivers comply with English Language proficiency (ELP) regulations if they want to get behind the wheel of a big rig in Missouri. White was very specific as to what "proficient" means.
“How we define sufficient English proficiency for the drivers is, can our officers effectively communicate with them? What that means is that can they understand and reply to official inquiries? Can they read and comprehend highway signs and signals, and can they complete those necessary logs and records?”
White added:
...[T]he public needs to understand that all CDL testing in Missouri, both written and practical testing, is completed in English. The applicant cannot utilize assistance from a translator or other services during those exams.”
What happens if an applicant fails ELP testing? White stated:
“If they’re not in compliance with the ELP then they are put out of service. So, the company is contacted. Sometimes the drivers provide another driver to come get that, but that driver is prohibited from going any further down the road. And they also can be cited with a citation for that violation.”
Pretty cut and dried in Missouri. Then...there is California. My colleague Bob Hoge recently reported that Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom is way too busy running for and pretending to already be president to have time for silly things like truck drivers who can't read road signs. Because of that, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has been tossing out commercial driver's licenses (CDL) like beads at Mardi Gras - to the tune of 17,000 of them - to illegal immigrants who are not English language proficient.
BREAKING: California admits they illegally issued 17,000 non-domiciled Commercial Driver’s Licenses to “dangerous foreign drivers.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says he’s revoking all of them.

Back in September, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy threatened to pull millions of dollars in federal funding if California did not clean up the commercial driver's licenses for illegal immigrants mess. But that has seemingly not been a deterrent. On Wednesday, Duffy called out Newsom's thumbing his nose at Transportation Department directives, and announced on X that he is revoking all 17,000 of those California CDLs.
It is an interesting intersection between red and blue states, how they operate, and obviously what they care and don't care about. I also recently reported on another red state, Oklahoma, which had done several sting operations along a stretch of Interstate 40; it yielded several illegal immigrant truck drivers, who had licenses from the usual suspects other than California, such as Illinois and New York, and even one who didn't bother to have a license at all.
Is it possible to plot your road trip through only red states, where the possibility that the drivers of 18-wheelers can speak and read English proficiently is greater? With guys like Gavin Newsom around, it might be worth a try.
"It's an extreme public safety issue."
