Bill Maher Marvels Over His Right-Wing Crowd, but It's Likely Due to His Increasing Conservatism

Is Bill Maher a member of the Left?

For the last few years, he’s appeared to believe so.

Yet, it progressively appears he’s not.

The term, after all, is relative.

Ronald Reagan the man ain’t, but it seems there’s been a substantial political shift. What once was the third base line of the Democrat Party is now far closer to right field.

Apropos of such, on a recent episode of The Joe Scarborough Podcast, Bill commented on his evolving audience.

As it turns out, he’s increasingly attracting conservatives.

“For the first time in my life, I am playing to a mixed [crowd],” he marveled.

The HBO host recounted a recent occurrence in Tennessee:

“I was in Nashville about a month ago. And the audience was about 60-40, I would say, liberal to conservative. That never used to happen. Never.”

He believes he knows why, and the theory involves history’s allegedly never-crazy Left:

“[I] think it’s because, you know, 10 years ago — in my opinion, anyway — the Left did not have a crazy section. There was no such thing as woke. And now they do have a crazy section, which I call out. As a liberal. And I think I’m kind of one of the only people doing that. So there’s a hunger to hear that.”

He does look to nearly be a lone voice — among those still identifying as left-wing.

Maher can’t help but have noticed a mutation:

“[T]o be able to play to a crowd like I did in Nashville that’s almost split even — that just never [happened] before. Never happened to me before. My audience was almost all completely liberal. But things have changed.”

They have, indeed.

Yet, perhaps Bill doesn’t wholly gather how much.

The comedian surely still considers himself a Democrat. But so far as I can tell, that party has pulled up stakes and moved camp.

And some of the principles upon which Bill stands — free speech being of particular prominence — may now place him squarely not only outside newly-Left circles, but beyond the border of the morphing DNC.

For quite a while, I’ve covered his conservative flair:

On Joe’s podcast, Bill recalled a recent show in the Bay Area, during which he received cheers in response to a ripping of left-wing lunacy:

“[T]here’s a big roar from the crowd. … I think traditional liberals have had it with the far Left of their own party.”

So what’s the future of the Democrat Party?

To hear Bill tell it, “ruin” is in the running:

“They’re in trouble right now. They need to…get their act together. They need to tame their far-Left caucus, which, I think, has far too much leverage right now.”

Once again — sounds like a conservative.

And — perhaps more profoundly — it doesn’t sound like a Democrat in D.C.

Will he one day #WalkAway?

Time will tell.

Judging by previous RedState reader comments, many among the Right may be reluctant to accept him.

At the same time, he’s acceleratingly at odds with the Dems.

For now, Bill may be a man without a country — like a controversial prophet of old.

The Party of the Donkey surely doesn’t appreciate his dissent.

I’m reminded of 2nd Peter 2:16:

But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet.

The Democrats’ most prominent TV host may one day (become) part (of) the Red “C” — for Conservatives, that is.

If so, his public transformation will be one of biblical proportion.
