Polling isn't really an exact science. It depends, in large part, on soliciting the opinions of people who, as often as not, aren't sure what they think on any given topic, and who are frequently ill-informed. The results of this can be surprising. The term "shock poll" is probably overused, but once in a while, it's justified.
But not for the reason one might think. The results of a recent Siena University study on how people in New York view the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) aren't really surprising. They are, though, unsettling.
Almost half of New Yorkers oppose the new lefty Democratic Socialists of America movement, according to a newly released poll.
Only 30% of likely Empire State voters told Siena University they take a favorable view of the DSA, while 47% view them unfavorably and another 23% were unsure.
Most of the DSA’s popularity is centered in New York City — with 49% of Big Apple respondents in favor of the political organization, which has surged in notoriety since the rise of Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Now, take a look at the wording here. Almost half of New Yorkers oppose the DSA, which represents, let's be honest, the communist wing of today's Democrat Party. Almost half. As in, a minority. That's in the state as a whole, not just in the city.
The results, though, do show a sharp regional divide. Roughly half of the respondents in the city favor the communists. That's right; about half of the respondents, even after several months of the commie Mayor Mamdani's dumb ideas, still support the DSA. Once you get outside the city, though, things change.

Support for the DSA, however, drops off a steep cliff at the Nassau and Westchester county lines, with only 16% of suburban voters and 27% of upstate voters supportive, according to the poll released Wednesday.
I've been saying, and writing, for some time now that the great divide facing our nation right now isn't just a matter of left vs. right. It's a matter of urban vs. suburban, small town, and rural. Today's Democrats, who are leaning farther to the left, it seems with each passing day, are increasingly creatures of the big cities. Both the wealthy elites and the dependency classes, who are the Democrats' primary supporters, tend to be in those urban areas.
Still, though, are these people incapable of reading and understanding history? Has anyone ever asked any of these people to name one - just one - communist country that was anything other than an economic disaster? Have they never heard of places like the Soviet Union? Have they never heard of Stalin, Pol Pot, Chairman Mao, or Fidel Castro? Are they really that unaware of the brutal history of communism, every single time it has been tried? Millions dead, entire national economies ruined, every single time communists have seized control.
Every. Single. Time. Oh, the new commies claim it will be better this time. "That wasn't real communism," they say. "We'll do better." And, like Charlie Brown lining up for one more try at that football, enough people may well buy it.
At least one key New York demographic seems to know a little better, and they are justifiably alarmed about the DSA's rhetoric:
Jewish New Yorkers are also starkly against the DSA, which has tapped into anti-Israel as part of its rise in the last year.
A massive 71% of Jewish respondents had an unfavorable view of the DSA, more than any other demographic polled by Siena besides Republicans and conservative-leaning voters.
Of course, Jewish respondents aren't pleased about the rise of the commies. They've heard this song before, and they know how it ends.
So, a shock poll this was, indeed; not because the results were unexpected, but more due to the anything-but-pretty picture it paints: A major American city succumbing to communism. And New York, sadly, isn't alone.
The next few years may prove interesting indeed.
