Too often, in this business, we see things that upset us, that anger us, that make us sad or pessimistic. The world is a just-plain unsettled place right now, and that includes the United States of America in this, our 250th year of liberty.
But now and then, something else comes across: Some small act of consideration, of patriotism, some small gesture that reminds us of what it really means to be an American.
One such recently appeared in Kentucky, from where CBS News' official X account brought us a video that should just plain make us feel good.

The post reads:
An Amazon driver stopped to untangle and salute an American flag outside a Kentucky home Monday, a moment that deeply touched the military family who lives there.
“Thank you for reminding us that there are still people who understand what that flag represents,” homeowner Ange Burnett said on Facebook. She is hoping to identify the driver so she can thank him.
Look at that video. What appears to be a young man in the uniform of an Amazon delivery driver, doing his job as he brings a large package up to the front door and sets it down. He then turns around and notices the tangled-up American flag. He then proceeds to gently untangle Old Glory to make it fly free once more. He then turns, takes a photo of the delivered package as he is required, then snaps to attention, delivers a crisp hand salute to the flag, does a perfect about-face, and goes back to work.
I'd bet money that this is a veteran right here.
I rarely have reason to say this, but that short online video actually gave me a little more hope for the future of the country I love so much. It reminded me that, for every leftist lunatic, for every "democratic socialist" (communist) shouter who hates America and wants to destroy everything that makes America great, there are thousands like this young man: Quietly going about his business, doing his job, being a part of this grand economy that has lifted more people out of poverty and privation than any other, this country that has liberated more people, has brought actual justice and individual rights to more people than any other nation in the history of the world. This young person deserves our respect, and our congratulations. With one small act, one quick glance, and the realization that no, this isn't right, the nation's proud flag shouldn't be tangled up like that, and the notion that "I can fix that," he brought a little bit of hope back to us.
Not too many years ago, you used to see bumper stickers proclaiming the value of "random acts of kindness." That's not a bad thing. But I was heartened to see this, a random act of patriotism. This is the America I grew up in. This is the America we should hope to be. This is the America we need to protect and defend. This is our America.
