California's impeccably coiffed Governor Gavin Newsom seems determined to do unto his 2028 presidential ambitions what the Eighth Air Force did to Germany from 1943 to 1945: Carpet-bomb it into oblivion. In June of 1945, in much of Germany, not one brick was standing atop another, and that's pretty much where Governor Newsom's presidential hopes are.
In his latest imbroglio, following President Trump's short (for him) and to-the-point address detailing massive problems in the American election systems, Newsom immediately called for the invocation of the 25th Amendment on the president.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom ignited an online firestorm on Thursday evening when, in response to President Donald Trump’s election integrity speech, he suggested that it was time to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove the president for displaying what he described as cognitive impairment.
"The only thing missing in Donald Trump’s speech was tin foil. This was a legitimate 25th Amendment moment — the rambling of a mad king," Newsom said.
Oh, the irony! Oh, the utter lack of self-awareness! This was a guy who insisted, throughout the presidency of the visibly failing Joe Biden, on making like Kevin Bacon in the great film Animal House, holding up his arms and crying, "Remain calm! All is well!"
If there was ever a president who really earned the title "First U.S. President removed under the 25th Amendment," it was daffy old Joe Biden.Needless to say, the backlash Governor Newsom received after this was - and I seldom use this word - epic.
To some critics, that case was much stronger under the last administration.
"You literally propped up a vegetable and lied to the American people about his cognitive decline for four years and never mentioned the 25th amendment once," the official Republican National Committee X account wrote in response, referring to Republican doubts that Biden had the mental acuity to run the country at age 82.
"Given Newsom's defense to this day of President Biden, calling him one of the greatest presidents ever, there's a saying around sitting this one out that applies here..." Fox News contributor Joe Concha wrote on X.
"Gavin Newsom wants to remove [Trump] from office for disclosing California could have tens of thousands of aliens illegally registered to vote and that China attacked 220 million voters," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said.
Governor Newsom deserved every pixel of those replies, and then some.

On Thursday night, there was no indication that President Trump was in any way having difficulty. His delivery was precisely as his delivery always has been, since his 2015 entry into presidential politics. Yes, he occasionally wanders down rhetorical side roads, and yes, he occasionally pauses to relate an anecdote. But not so Thursday night; he was focused, he came what he had come to say, and he walked away.
Unlike Joe Biden, President Trump doesn't need anyone to lead him off the stage, either.
Compare that to Joe Biden's presidency, especially the last few months. In a way, it was sad; the man was so obviously lost and confused. He was showing all the clinical signs of advancing dementia: Trouble with word-finding, sudden flashes of unfounded anger, inappropriate physical gestures, and touching. He was and is slipping away into a non compos mentis state, and everybody knows it - even Democrats who are still - still - insisting, oh, no, he's fine.
Anyone who watched the one 2024 debate between Biden and Trump got a great lesson in just how capable they both were, and the difference was so pronounced that, within a matter of days, a great big Chuck Jones/Warner Brothers cartoon hook had come in from stage right and yanked old Joe right off the stage.
But that's Democrats for you. Principals, not principles.
Editor's Note: President Trump is leading America into the "Golden Age" as Democrats try desperately to stop it.
