In addition to Making America Great Again, President Trump is working to Make Washington, D.C. Beautiful Again, and that's a good thing. On Tuesday, President Trump, speaking to the assembled media on the White House grounds, provided some updates and commentary on the status of the ongoing White House ballroom construction. Key takeaway: President Trump notes that his administration will get little if any use out of this, as it won't be finished in time, but future administrations will.
That was, in fact, his primary point.
'THIS IS MY GIFT TO THE USA': President Trump explains why the White House ballroom is essential

The president said:
When this is finished, my term ends, shortly after that. This is really for other presidents, this is not for me. This is my gift to the United States of America. I'm going to be able to use it very little, because when it's finished, we're talking about six or seven months. But it will be used for, hopefully, hundreds of years for other presidents, and there will never be anything like this build again. There will never be another room built with the safety. As an example, if we had the White House Correspondent's Dinner in here, it would have no problem.
The White House is more than just another federal building. It's the home of the president, the commander-in-chief of our military, the head of the executive branch, the head of state for our nation. It should be modern. It should have all the whistles and bells. We are America, for crying out loud; we don't do things half-way.
Then, the president spoke on the size of the ballroom and the cost of construction.
President Trump has a message for those whining about the size of the new White House ballroom:

"We’re right on budget, we’re right on plan. The only budget change would be that we doubled the size AT THE REQUEST OF THE MILITARY." pic.twitter.com/chqLKxOR4n
The president said:
...a shield over the top of (the ballroom). It's a shield that will totally protect what's downstairs. And, there are a lot of things going on downstairs. And some of it you see. This goes down six stories. You see three stories, because it's already been built. This will be, very shortly, this will be in the form of... The roof goes along this line. (Pointing) Basically, it goes outside, you see where the wood is, you're going outside of that line, and then it's going straight up. And, it's all protection. Everything's together. You can't build one without the other. And, what we have, is we have the safest building ever built, in my opinion.
You can have... And you know, the other thing is, we're right on budget, we're right on plan, the only budget change would be that we doubled the size at the request of the military, we doubled the size. But we're right on budget, right on plan, and originally we were going to build a much smaller room and it wouldn't have done the job. It just wouldn't have done the job. We have too many events. Like if we had President Xi coming here, we have no place to put him. We had the king and the queen the other day, and we had a thousand people wanting in on it, and we ended up having a hundred people sitting in a (inaudible) ballroom. So, they've been after this for a long time, and maybe, more important, is the safety element. This is shield that protects everything that's inside. Everything that's on top. And obviously, you know, the White House was built in 1792.
See above. President Trump will doubtless take some criticism from the left for focusing for a few minutes on this construction while things are a-popping in the Middle East. And, again, we're America. We can walk and chew gum at the same time, even if the legacy media and American leftists (but I repeat myself) can't.

Finally, on the president's efforts to beautify Washington:
.@POTUS: "It's a sad thing" that some can't appreciate his D.C. beautification efforts:

"I want to see Washington be beautiful. To me, it's very important... We didn't have one [fountain] in Washington that worked—and soon, they'll all be working." https://t.co/7ztOgSAgul pic.twitter.com/4TlNSl4shn
The president continues:
Question: Why do you think people are so mad about your renovations...
President Trump: Because I'm doing it.
Question: You've got Meridian Hill Park, you've got the water flowing again, all of it, and they just seem to hate you for that.
President Trump: Well, it's a sad thing actually. You know... It's very nice, I appreciate the question. First, I said this is going to be a negative question, then she was really saying why do they hate you for fixing the water fountains? We have 40... because I want to see Washington be beautiful. To me, it's very important. But as an example, you mentioned the water fountain; we didn't have one water fountain. I think we had 40. We didn't have one in Washington that worked, and soon, they'll all be working. Many of them work right now. And the, uh, I think one of their best things, Obama, President Obama, President Biden spent much more than 100 million dollars on the reflecting lake between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. They spent much more. They spent, some people say, $200 million. You know what they got out of it? A closed lake. It never opened, and when it did, it shut right away. It leaked. There was a disaster. I'm doing a job on the reflecting lake for a fraction of what they paid. Now I've upgraded it, I got so into it, I've upgraded like you wouldn't believe. I do all the walkways outside. I am doing it properly. But it's a much bigger job. But you see it's happening now. It's going to be beautiful. It's gonna be waterproof. It's gonna be reflecting again. I took over a dirty, filthy thing that wasn't open, and it was disgusting. And friends of mine would come to the Lincoln or Washington, and they'd say, 'Sir, it's disgusting.' I said, 'What's disgusting?' 'The Reflecting Lake.' So I drove down. I looked with Secretary Burgum, who is fantastic, of the Interior. He's fantastic. We got together. It's under construction right now. I wanna get it opened before July 4th, which we'll easily be able to do. It will be opened before that. But easily will be able to do, July 4th, being a very special day. And it is going to be beautiful. Beautiful blue color. Dark blue color. It's very reflective. I put a thing out yesterday showing the reflection. We did a little test. We wanted to see, it's unbelievable. Like a mirror. It's like a mirror.
Question: Does it look good?
President Trump: It's like a mirror. It's beautiful.
OK, there's a lot there. But, yes, these are all efforts worth undertaking, and for the same reason as the earlier D.C. crime crackdown. Washington, D.C., and all its historic buildings, monuments, and attractions, is the capital of the greatest nation on the planet, probably the greatest nation in the history of humanity. The last nation to have the overwhelming advantage in economic and military might as us, was Rome, and the world was a much smaller place then. Our capital should be a source of pride and joy for every American, and should inspire awe and amazement for every foreign visitor.
We are the United States of America. We are the biggest and the best. President Trump is working to make our national capital reflect that. It's worth doing.
