Here's the thing about principles: They apply the same way, every time. If discrimination based on race is wrong, then it's wrong no matter who is doing the discriminating or who is being discriminated against.
Now, the American left doesn't seem to understand that. They are, as I've often pointed out, concerned about principals, not principles. University admissions have, in recent history, reflected that. But the times, they are a'changing; the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is finding that out now, as the Justice Department has released the results of an investigation into admissions at the school.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has completed a year-long investigation into the admissions policies and practices at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
The Department uncovered evidence that UCLA’s leadership intentionally selected applicants based on their race. Documents reviewed by the Division reveal that UCLA adheres to the dubious contention that patients receive the best care when treated by a doctor of the same race, rather than by the most qualified.
Full disclosure: I am not without a personal concern in this matter. Our oldest granddaughter was admitted to a medical school, not this one, but one in Texas, and her admission was surely on merit. She worked throughout her pre-med program, studied while other kids were partying, and she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant to gain personal experience in patient care, and maintained a stellar GPA. She was admitted on merit. That's the only way anyone should be admitted to any of these institutions. That's not what UCLA did.
“UCLA’s admissions process has been focused on racial demographics at the expense of merit and excellence — allowing racial politics to distract the school from the vital work of training great doctors.” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Racism in admissions is both illegal and anti-American, and this Department will not allow it to continue.”
“Federal law and the Supreme Court precedent are clear: Race discrimination has no place in our nation’s institutions of higher learning,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California. “The pattern of illegal and odious conduct by UCLA’s medical school is abhorrent to our Constitution and our nation’s founding principles.”
Not to mention the very real risk in the delivery of patient care. Was the David Geffen School of Medicine allowing admission standards to slip so they could attain some "correct" proportion of plumbing, skin tone, and sleeping partners? It seems likely.

Whether they played with standards or not, what they did was clearly wrong, and not just because of a Supreme Court ruling. This is a thing that is not wrong because it is illegal; it is illegal because it is wrong. This, discrimination based on race or national origin, is a thing that is wrong in essence. And the great irony is that the left, the people on the political left, are the quickest to sound the call, "Racist!" And then, as with this example, they engage in blatantly racist policies.
Yes, racist. The David Geffen School of Medicine, no matter what fancy, DEI-based, squishy language they wrap it in, was engaging in racist admission practices. Actually, by gosh, racism. There's no amount of fuzzy language you can wrap this in that makes it anything else. Fortunately, we have a great Justice Department, and most especially a great Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, Harmeet Dhillon, who is cracking down on these racist practices.
There are two key takeaways from this affair: The left, once more, has proved that they are all about principals, not principles; and when the left falsely accuses those of us on the right of a thing, like racism, they are almost always guilty of it themselves.
