CCP Member and Biology Researcher at U.S. University Guilty in E. Coli DNA Smuggling Scheme From China

If this doesn't indicate that some people in China are up to no good, I don't know what might. Yet another Chinese national has been caught attempting to smuggle biological material into the United States, and it could be put to some pretty nasty purposes.

On Friday (April 10), the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana issued a press release on the incident. That press release states in part:

Youhuang Xiang (“Xiang”), 32, formerly a post-doctoral researcher at Indiana University and a citizen of the People’s Republic of China, has been sentenced to more than four months in prison, a $500 fine, and one year of supervised release, after pleading guilty to smuggling biologic materials into the United States from China. As part of Xiang’s plea agreement with the government, Xiang also stipulated to the entry of a Judicial Order of Removal, which will result in his immediate removal from the United States to the People's Republic of China.

So, this person is being repatriated, and that's a good thing. The question remains, how many more Chinese nationals are currently engaged in similar studies right here, right now?

Here's the onion:

On November 23, 2025, Xiang was interviewed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) officials at Chicago O’Hare International Airport as he returned to the U.S. from a research trip in the United Kingdom. During that interview, Xiang initially denied any knowledge of smuggling but subsequently admitted the shipping manifest for the package he received in March of 2024 was intentionally mislabeled and samples of DNA of E. coli bacteria were concealed in that package to circumvent U.S. law.  Based on those admissions, CBP immediately terminated Xiang’s J‑1 visa, and he was arrested by the FBI.

During the sentencing hearing on April 7, 2026, the U.S. District Court also heard that the FBI’s investigation uncovered evidence that Xiang was a member of the Chinese Communist Party (“CCP”), and that Xiang lied about his affiliation with the CCP when questioned by immigration authorities.

So, not just a Chinese national, but an actual commie - a member of the Chinese Communist Party - and who lied about the contents of a package, which turned out to contain E. coli DNA.

There are a few troubling unknowns in all this:

First, was the DNA altered in any way? That would take some serious time in a genetics lab to determine, and as yet it's not known if any such analysis is being done, or if the DNA was just chucked in an incinerator, which is probably the safest thing to do.

Second, who in the United States was Xiang working with? Does he have any contact with any other Chinese nationals in the United States? If so, what are they doing? Are any of them engaged in similar research?

Third and finally: E. coli can be nasty stuff. In its original form, it won't kill a healthy person, although it may make you wish you were dead for a few days. But its genome isn't all that complex; it wouldn't be hard to meddle with and possibly make it very dangerous indeed.

Biological agents, as I have written many times, are far more frightening than nuclear or chemical weapons if you understand how they work. There's an old saw that states that while the Great War was the war of chemists and World War 2 the war of physicists, World War 3 will be the war of biologists, and that has a far greater chance of being civilization-ending than the other two.
