Iran confirms it has accepted a two-week ceasefire.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council says it has accepted a two-week ceasefire in the war. Its statement said it would negotiate with the United States in Islamabad beginning Friday. “It is emphasized that this does not signify the termination of the war,” the statement said. “Our hands remain upon the trigger, and should the slightest error be committed by the enemy, it shall be met with full force.”

Now, we see an announcement from President Donald Trump of a possible cease-fire deal, wherein Iran will be required to agree to allow shipping to proceed unimpeded through the Straits of Hormuz, and both sides will apparently hold to a two-week cease-fire.

The president writes (paragraph breaks added for clarity):
Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.
This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.
We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

That remains to be seen. Any agreement with the mullahs and their minions currently running Iran won't be worth the paper it's printed on. Everyone knows that. President Trump surely knows that. Iran's ruling maniacs are liars, as the West has known for, well, 47 years. They simply can't be trusted.
But Iran's military capability has been set back a decade. Or has it? Any deal that leaves the mullahs in charge, any deal that allows Iran to remain under the boot (or sandal) of the Islamic Republic, is a loss. If any such deal involves lifting sanctions and allowing the mullahs to sell oil and gas on the world market, that allows them to make best use of the fortune that's under their feet, we will see them buying more military hardware as fast as they can - more airplanes, more missiles, more rifles, more ammo.
Yes, it's better to jaw, jaw than to war, war. But something has to come out of this, something more than just blowing up Iran's aging air force and turning their navy into really expensive aquarium decorations. The mullahs have to go. Whatever deal is made, a free, fair, internationally monitored election should follow; that should be one point that the Trump administration and Israel should stick to like glue.
