Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) is a national treasure. Being more than a little acquainted with the whole "folksy wisdom" thing myself, I recognize a master when I see one, and Senator Kennedy is one of the finest practitioners of that art, ever. This is a man who could have given Mark Twain a run for his money, and we're lucky to have him around. I'm just sorry he's not in Alaska, so I could run in and enthusiastically vote for him at every opportunity.
Now, he's offered some thoughts on the recent Supreme Court tariff decision, and there is a veiled Alaska reference in there - sort of.
Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., offered an optimistic perspective on the Supreme Court’s tariff ruling, arguing the "grizzly" in the Oval Office should view it as a win.
In a 6-3 ruling Friday, the high court struck down President Donald Trump’s global tariff authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Despite the legal setback, Kennedy argued Trump’s use of tariffs has secured strong trade deals and could boost the economy.
Up here in the Great Land, we have some experience with grizzlies, having more of them than the rest of the United States combined. They are formidable; 500 to 800-pound, 35 mph murder missiles, with jaws that can crush bone, claws that can puncture sheet metal, and strength to pull the door off a pickup. One can't help but think that President Trump would be flattered by the comparison.
He wasn't done opining after the ursine comparison; he had some more colorful comments.
Democrats lauded the Supreme Court’s ruling as a victory, arguing tariffs raise prices for everyday Americans. Kennedy, however, questioned what will happen with the tariff revenue already collected.
"My Democratic colleagues are saying, ‘Oh, give it back, give back,’" he said.
"My Democratic peeps better be careful what they ask for, because if he gives back $300 billion worth of tariff money to the business community in America, this economy's [going to] roar, man, and the midterms are only a few months off," Kennedy added.
Roaring? Another grizzly reference? Possibly so. And it wasn't the last one:
"The president didn't just sit around admiring that trade authority, that tariff authority, sucking on his teeth. He used it, and he used it to negotiate trade agreements," Kennedy said.
And:
"He believes in being a bear. And he thinks if you’re [going to] be a bear, be a grizzly," Kennedy said of Trump’s aggressive trade strategy.
Being acquainted with bears - and Alaska, mind you, is the only state that has not one, not two, but three kinds of bears - I can't help but agree.

While it took the inestimable Senator Kennedy to bring the comparison up, it's a good one. President Trump, even before his move into politics, has always seemed to be a "go big or go home" operator. He certainly has never lacked for ambitious goals, and running for president three times and winning twice is only the latest in a long series of those goals. And Democrats who long to take the House so they can fire up the Impeach-a-Palooza may want to remember one thing: A bear is at its most dangerous when it's injured and hurting. As for the tariffs - well, President Trump is already back on the advance, as my colleague Becca Lower has noted on Saturday:

Done like a griz. Not subtle, but certain.
What would be very entertaining now would be to hear what President Trump, being an urbanite himself, thinks of the grizzly comparison.
Editor’s Note: Thanks to President Trump’s leadership and bold policies, America’s economy is back on track.
