Now It's Official: Trump Reveals the Administration's Path Forward After SCOTUS Scraps Tariffs

At long last as RedState wrote earlier on Friday, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling on the Trump administration's use of emergency powers to enact its tariff policy:

On Friday, the Supreme Court issued its decision in the case(s) of Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump and Trump v. V.O.S. Selections, Inc., holding that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the president to impose the tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the 6-3 decision, with Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh dissenting (though there are some concurrences, as well).

Then during the afternoon, as my colleague Ward Clark shared, President Trump gave a press conference at the White House in reaction to SCOTUS scrapping the tariffs. As part of his remarks, and in a post on his Truth Social account, Trump laid out some "alternatives" - that is, tools still at the administration's disposal to continue levying tariffs.

Among the options he mentioned were parts of some existing laws, and hinted that he would "sign an order later today to impose a 10% global tariff over and above our tariffs already being charged... We’re also initiating several sections, 301 and other investigations to protect our country from unfair trading practices of other countries and companies."

Pres. Trump added that "[o]ther alternatives will now be used to replace the ones that the court incorrectly rejected."

It is now official, with the White House releasing the text of a new proclamation signed by the president, in which he "invok[es] his authority under section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974" to impose the 10 percent tariffs, beginning Feb. 24, for 150 days.

Trump also signed a separate executive order that "reaffirmed and continued the suspension of duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value shipments, including goods shipped through the international postal system, which will also be subject to the temporary import duty imposed under section 122."

In an additional action, according to the White House, "the President has directed the Office of the United States Trade Representative to use its section 301 authority to investigate certain unreasonable and discriminatory acts, policies, and practices that burden or restrict U.S. commerce."

Pres. Trump shared the news in a post on Truth Social, writing:

It is my Great Honor to have just signed, from the Oval Office, a Global 10% Tariff on all Countries, which will be effective almost immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

The president also had more thoughts on the decision in a thread. First, he wrote:

"Those members of the Supreme Court who voted against our very acceptable and proper method of TARIFFS should be ashamed of themselves. Their decision was ridiculous but, now the adjustment process begins, and we will do everything possible to take in even more money than we were taking in before!"

Then he continued, promising that the "new tariffs...are on their way!":
