California's impeccably coiffed Governor Gavin Newsom is reportedly mulling over a 2028 run for President. That is, he's thinking about thinking about it. On Sunday, we learned that he's confirmed his ambitions, but there's a catch: He hasn't confirmed that he's going to do anything about them.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has finally confirmed he’s looking at a 2028 presidential bid — but is still playing coy about whether he’ll actually run.
“Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise,” Newsom told “CBS News Sunday Morning” in a pre-taped interview, when asked if he was considering a White House campaign.
“I’d just be lying. And I’m not — I can’t do that.”
In recent months, Newsom has swung through key early states and launched a podcast where he’s honed his debate skills — sparring with conservative guests.
We can now safely confirm that he hasn't confirmed his confirmation. This guy has more twists and turns in him than a snake with a broken back.
Of course, Newsom would be a great candidate for the Republicans. Anyone who has not been living in a hollow log in the Siberian taiga for the last few years knows his track record in California: Record taxes, the highest gas prices in the nation, the highest homeless population in the nation; under his watch California has made a habit of issuing commercial drivers' licenses to illegal aliens who are only marginally fluent and literate in English, if that, sometimes with fatal results.
His social media presence, while trying to emulate Donald Trump, has made him more like an enraged preschooler who somehow gained access to Dad's social media accounts.
Democrats seem to like him, though. That says a lot about the state of the Democratic Party today - and the fact that Gavin Newsom went "all in" on poor, sad old Joe Biden in 2024 says a lot about the governor.
Polls regularly peg the slick-haired pol as a top contender in a Democratic primary.
“Fate will determine that,” Newsom added when pressed on whether he’s inching toward a presidential bid.
The California governor previously drew 2024 presidential buzz but ultimately went all in on former President Joe Biden.
Imagine a 2028 presidential debate between Governor Newsom and Vice President JD Vance; the VP is everything Gavin Newsom isn't, specifically, intelligent, well-informed, and with a great sense of humor and a compelling personal story.
Then again, who else do the Democrats have? Kamala Harris?

Sure, Gavin Newsom won the election for Governor of California. But the once-Golden State, right now, would elect a stuffed armadillo if it had a "D" after its name. I mean, they elected Adam Schiff to the Senate. And it's not at all clear that Governor Newsom understands that a campaign that appeals to Los Angeles and the Bay Area won't fly in Montana, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Pennsylvania - or Alaska.
2028's a long way off. We can forgive Gavin Newsom for playing his cards close to his chest for the moment. But we can't forgive him for the ruin he wrought on San Francisco, and later on California. This is a man who must never be President of the United States.
